BlkTallFullfig -> Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/10/2013 7:40:03 AM)

The song/lyrics here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXm1ssPA1h8

Do they: "Brad Paisley, LL Cool J deserve scorn and praise for 'Accidental Racist'?"

Sounds like a very well intentioned effort, but falls so short on the delivery. I think people are being a little tough on them.

“Accidental Racist” is about how cultural symbols favored by whites and blacks — the fashion choice of wearing Confederate flags or baggy pants, for instance — come loaded with meaning.

It’s not a new discussion. Though race relations have evolved over the decades, cultural symbols continue to color perceptions.

Paisley uses the Confederate flag as an example in the song, noting whites are “caught between Southern pride and Southern blame” 150 years after the end of the Civil War.

“I try to put myself in your shoes and that’s a good place to begin,” Paisley sings, “but it ain’t like I can walk a mile in someone else’s skin/Because I’m a white man livin’ in the southland/Just like you I’m more than what it seems/I’m proud of where I’m from/But not everything we’ve done/It ain’t like you and me can rewrite history/Our generation didn’t start this nation/We’re still paying for mistakes that a bunch of folks made long before we came.”
“One of my favorite lines in the song is he says ‘I think the relationship between the Mason-Dixon needs some fixin’
I can give due credit for good effort. They are hardly secretary of state or defense, I don't believe it was the initiation of love and peace treaty talks amongst Americans of all ethnicities. M

Hillwilliam -> RE: The Road To Hell: Accidental Racist (4/10/2013 8:12:19 AM)

I think that, unfortunately, there are people on both sides who do not desire a dialogue because they make too much money fomenting problems and taking advantage of 'incidents'.
Paisley and Cool J will be attacked from both sides for this for all the wrong reasons.
Some people don't want peace because conflict is just too damn profitable.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/10/2013 8:28:08 AM)

To summarize something I heard NPR yesterday, Interracial music is at best cheesy like black or white and ebony and ivory, and rarely works musically. Sure the intent may be good and the song may spark some discussion, but in the end it will end up on the heap of musical losers and be forgotten soon.

I agree completely. It makes me insane how something simple can be made to be soooo complicated. 2 Brothers reaching out. Why villify them, instead of saying gentlemen, we understand you wanted to approach this subject, but maybe you two can be on panels, bring visibility to those who are trying, and help us discuss these issues further. I don't want to discard the possibility that something born from the heart and soul, would always end up in useless pile. Sparking a conversation on something so important, is worthwhile, IMO. M

A panel? So we can continue the discussion within the narrow little lines of what we are, and are not, allowed to say? Why the FUCK would musicians have to abandon their art, and play someone elses stupid game by being on a "panel?"

I don't care for 90% of rap, and I dislike country even more. Want interracial music? Check out Killswitch Engage. Big, black R&B pipes, booming out the lyrics over some serious angry white dude metal.

It's called free speech, and I wish them all the best with their efforts (even if I'll never listen to it). If the race pimps don't like where that leads, they can go straight to hell.

Interesting theory when the two songs you give as examples most definitely have not ended up there, and both were by the very unforgettable Michael Jackson, with the former being a duet with SIR (as in knighted by the queen of England) Paul McCartney. Could you pick two less forgettable songs?

Powergamz1 -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/10/2013 8:40:34 PM)

Brad is an interesting artist, deeper than the usual hat act. Like Clint Eastwood, he makes 3 or 4 formulaic crowd pleasers so he can send a message in the next one.

At first I was afraid that the only 'dialogue' that this song would open was another flood of Confederate 'heritage'/battle flag revisionist propaganda. But I guess that offers one more chance to rebut those myths with facts, and maybe people will quit falling for them someday.

Musically, it feels contrived.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/11/2013 6:31:37 AM)

Don't bitch at me....Take it up with NPR, they are the ones who said it..

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: The Road To Hell: Accidental Racist (4/11/2013 6:51:01 AM)

I imagine they are significantly more progessive thinkers than you for making the song in the first place, and expressing a good faith attempt at understanding each other. Hostile as you are, why would anyone ever need to have a conversation, or reach out to decrease ignorance about one another.

The race pimps? Why would you wish them anywhere near where you are?

@LafayetteLady ^^ I rather liked those two songs.

Powergamz1 I agree that musically it was hardly a best of moment. I just gave them A for effort, without being a cynical. M

TheHeretic -> RE: The Road To Hell: Accidental Racist (4/11/2013 6:25:48 PM)

BTF, when you start talking about telling artists they shouldn't express themselves in their medium, or move outside the acceptable paramaters of what can and cannot be said, you are damn right you are going to experience some hostility from my end. You cannot imagine the contempt I hold for anyone who would suggest such nonsense.

As for your assumptions about my views, it's beautifully ironic that you should mention ignorance in the next sentence.

Have a lovely night. [:)]

Marini -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/11/2013 8:42:35 PM)

Thanks for giving us something to think about Ms Lady!

I am not sure how I feel about this, I think the intentions probably were honorable.

**Happy dance for Ms.Thang starting a post down here in the basement.**

Speaking of the race pimps, here is the one whose screed is brought to us by Time.

http://ideas.time.com/2013/04/11/viewpoint-you-cant-be-an-accidental-racist/

How dare a white guy, and a black guy, come together to say something off script?

Marini -> RE: The Road To Hell: Accidental Racist (4/11/2013 9:20:22 PM)

I would love to see more of this, and less of a lot of the racial divisions in the world.

Here is one of my musical versions of "good intentions" and crossing racial barriers.

Foreigner "I want to know what love is"

I can think of many "interracial"songs, that work musically.
How about this one also for good measure?

RUN DMC/Aerosmith "Walk this Way"

Rich, do you dance a little like Steven Tyler? lol

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/12/2013 9:39:35 AM)

It's good to see you around too Marini. xo M

Now there's an image that will have people running for the exits, Mari. No. My idea of a dance club requires a roll of $1 bills in my shirt pocket. [:D]

This is what I drive home blasting (and yes, I do get funny looks in my shirt and tie, rolling along in a beige Honda, and rocking out to this stuff).

Singer Howard Jones left the band last year, with health issues, but is reported to be involved with a new project. The further his influence on heavy metal vocal style goes, the happier I will be.

PayAttention123 -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/12/2013 7:00:51 PM)

It is called PUBLICITY. Brad has a new CD coming out. LL Cool J is a TV Star nowadays. Days of newspapers & blogs talking about it. SUCCESSFUL Publicity Campaign. As cynical as that, that is what is all about,

TheHeretic -> RE: Good Intentions, and The Road: Accidental Racist (4/12/2013 7:38:55 PM)

The publicity isn't going to hurt, but I think there was a genuine desire to kick down some barriers to communication, and let the conversation flow down some different channels.
