President Barack Obama on Wednesday proposed a $3.77 trillion budget he called "a fiscally responsible blueprint for middle class jobs and growth" that he says will reduce the deficit.

Setting up an expected fight with Congress, Obama wants $563 billion in tax increases aimed at the wealthy and $78 billion over 10 years from new cigarette taxes and assumes a deal to roll back the sequester cuts will be struck.

And Obama is counting $1.384 billion in savings from winding down the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and $452 million in cuts to a program that provides funding for heating assistance for low-income households. The budget also includes major cuts to farm subsidies, cuts to the LIHEAP heating programs for the poor, lowering the budget for detaining illegal immigrants, new embassy security as recommended by the Benghazi Review Board and $222 million for gun control efforts.

"The American people deserve better than what we've been seeing, the short-sighted, crisis-driven spending cuts that are already hurting a lot of communities out there," Obama said at the White House. "If we want to keep rebuilding our economy on a stronger, more stable foundation, then we've got to get smarter about our priorities as a nation."

It will be dismissed out of hand, as will the teabagger "budget", and I dont see any compromises hanging out at the fiscal door.

Lucylastic -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 8:35:11 AM)

yeah Im just waiting on the arguments:)

Glad he finally put something on the table. Sad it is nearly a trillion above the revenue the gov't will get.

Let him tax cigarettes all he wants...more and more people are quitting, that piggy bank will dry up real quick...

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 8:43:18 AM)

I think it was a waste of time and energy for him to do this.   Ah well, politics.

It is just a reworked budget from last year with some little gives to the teabaggers for cuts.  Essentially same budget as the one he has always put forward.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 8:48:32 AM)

yeah it was a waste of time. But, if he isn't going to take trying get the budget in balance seriously, he lend credence to the teabaggers......... Not to say we can't run deficits at all but this is still 800-900 Billion dollar deficits or about 25% of the budget. At some point you have to get your fiscal house in order whether you like it or not.

We know the tea will run around and cry regardless of what he does. But, he could seriously take a crack at it like an Adult and take the lead...Oh well.

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 8:53:12 AM)

he lends no credence to teabaggers, he shows them up for the fiscal disasters they are.  He has taken a crack at it in the day, and found out that it won't wash to be fiscally responsible with teabaggers at the pursestrings.

have you read the teabagger budget?  Same old shit as since the days of St. Wrinklemeat.

Cut education, health, medicare, medicaide, social security, infrastructure, give it all to corporations and defense.

FunCouple5280 -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 9:00:05 AM)

Not saying the tea budget is worth shit either.....

But when the fed, state, and local gov't are taking over 33% of the GDP in taxes there comes a point where, no matter how much you want it to be, it is not a revenue problem. Obama is not running for reelection. this is the second term.. Time to make the hard choices.

mnottertail -> RE: Obama Budget announced (4/10/2013 9:06:43 AM)

Looks like some hard choices in there, I can't see the malthusian budget proposals flowing from the whitehouse and put us even deeper in Grecian Formula, nor can I see a throw it all into the wind and see where it falls budget either.  I think it is a middle of the road compromise that should be worked from, but it will be ignored roundly and soundly.

3.8 trillion "responsible".

I don't even need to turn on the comedy channel.

Great stuff.

(Can't possibly add to that).
