Ironbear, I like your solution. I've a semi-race camshaft for a 350 Chevy that is not quite as good as a gun, but not bad. There is one problem with these things, you can't be home all the time.

A few years ago we got robbed, of all things of our drop piece. If we were home they would be in posession of that cheapo Raven automatic, clutching it in their cold dead fingers. Instead they probably traded it for some crack. This was a quickie daytime job, all they took was the gun. Wouldn't have noticed but for the broken tub surround in the downstairs bathroom. They missed over a thousand in currency and hundreds in coins. They missed the Browning shotgun worth 20 times what the Raven was worth.

A couple of years earlier my nextdoor neighbor gor robbed, of a playstation only. Probably the same idiots, probably kids. In his case they passed up thousands of dollars worth of guitars and band equipment.

That's nothing compared to about 20 years ago when I really got robbed. Even my guitar. It was finally in tune. My stereo, the stereo that got the cops from an adjacent city to come. It taught me a very valuable lesson though. Not what you think.

See I used to steal a very long time ago. When I got robbed I stopped. That's when I realized that there was more to it than money. Trust is now more important than money to me, and the people who robbed you, I hope they get to this point in their life. The guilt never goes away, ever. It's like when someone dies, it doesn't go away, you just get used to it. When you do something dishonorable, you pay for it whether you get caught or not.

Let's hope something happens to your robbers, that they get robbed. Something they did not steal, a family heirloom will do. Something they can't replace, would give a big reward fo it's return, something near and dear to them. Let's hope that item is made of metal and gets scrapped, melted down and made into part of a new Toyota. Serves them right.

Either that or get Ironbear to move in.

PS; Ironbear, just how many times can a robber accidentally slam his face into a doorjamb ? Did he mention how good it felt when you stopped him from this destructive behavior ? Did you mention how hard it is to change a doorjamb and he should be careful not to damage it ? Really he should learn not to chip the paint off, too many coats of paint and the door might stick.

Now that I mentioned it, I just remembered a porn tape I had a long time ago where a robber was caught by dominants. Now that would be fun, and they have not set any limits :-). Want to do something your mate doesn't like, try it on the robber ! "See honey he survived it", "No he didn't", "But that's because I shot him, I just won't shoot you", "OK then". You can't turn a losing situation into a winning situation without lateral thinking.

Sorry, i wasn't aware of the difference in terms.  "Burglarized" just took longer to type, hehe.  We unfortunately can't really have dogs; gone from the house too much to make sure that they are properly taken care of.

i do feel a bit better...it was being away from the house for a night for work and coming back to everything okay that helped some.  i told some neighbors, and one of them is going to send a message out to everyone through the HOA.

i wish the houses on either side of us weren't empty...easy cover for someone and how we think the got over the fence.

Does "gone too much from the house" mean you travel a lot and can't leave a dog unattended for days at a time, or you don't like to leave a dog at home alone all day?

An adult protection dog doesn't need TLC, a big yard or kids to play with on a daily basis. It would need to be walked/exercised daily for a half hour or hour but that's good for both owner and dog, if you can fit it in.  There are also couch-potato dogs like retired greyhounds that don't even require that much; research various breeds for maintenance requirements.

I believe I've read in a few places that dogs are the biggest deterrent when it comes to house burglaries. No burglar wants to deal with a dog, even a yappy one in a lot of cases; it's easier to go to another block and try another house.

It's being gone most nights, not getting that half an hour of free time consistently daily, having a really tiny backyard that would do no good for a dog, and a cat that it would have to get along with.  It's also my fiance....we had to get rid of a ferret that was supposed to be his main responsibility and became largely mine.  i don't want the same to happen with a dog--having two jobs makes me really appreciate having a low maintenance cat.

We want one once our schedules become a little more consistent, but that may take awhile.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Robbed? (6/24/2006 3:39:38 PM)

I'm so sorry!  I'm glad they didn't get away with very much!

I've been robbed several times.  When I was 18, the house my friend and I rented was broken into and stripped clean while we were at work.  Then a vacation home my family was staying in was robbed.  Apparently the robber went through my room while I was sleeping.  Very creepy.  My car has been broken into twice.  The first time they broke into my car, all they stole was three 2-liters of pop.  The second time they made away with about $3,000 dollars worth of stereo equipment, and they left my car in pieces.  They crowbarred the trunk and doors open, bashed it into a pulp, and slit the tires.  They found out who did it (the people who ran the meth house next door) but I never got my stuff back.

Edited to add:  Petwolf, if you're having trouble with your alarm, call the company and tell them what happened and explain that you need new codes and an inspection to make sure no wires were cut and the system wasn't vandalized.  My husband works for a security company and he's a whiz with alarm systems, so if you have any problems, feel free to e-mail me and I'll ask him.

i appreciate that...i changed all the codes just in case and accidentally tested the system trying to put in the old code, so i know it's still working properly.  We also got our safe in today, and since the alarm WILL be set from now on, i don't think anyone will try to carry it away in the short amount of time they have (it's a lot heavier than a firebox).

Evanesce -> RE: Robbed? (6/24/2006 5:03:23 PM)

I've been burglarized twice.  Once in 1981, by my daughter's father - who stole everything I owned, including my car, and left me pregnant and stranded 1000 miles from home.  The second time was in 1986 - by my ex-fiancee, who got away with a $600 chess set, my stereo, my entire music collection, and my telephone.  Both times, I was more pissed off than anything else.  After the second one, the police could find no forced entry (which is how I knew it was my ex) and, even though I KNEW he'd done it, the police told me there wasn't anything they could do unless I actually saw my property in his house.  Like that was going to happen.  A couple weeks later, after I'd replaced my phone, I started getting threatening phone calls that made me afraid to be home alone at night, in spite of having a large, man-hating dog.  My solution was to sell my mobile home and move.

Now, we have two large dogs with no fenced-in yard, so the entire neighborhood knows if they come into our house, they're going to have both dogs to deal with, and everyone's afraid of my rottie (even though she'd probably invite them in and show them where all the good stuff was while the other dog made tea).

indybbwsubbie -> RE: Robbed? (6/24/2006 5:21:39 PM)

i got my house robbed last yr.  The kid stole several items - including my box of sex toys - which he may have thought was a gun or something valuable in there!  i am sure he wasnt' expecting a cup full of clothes pins, various butt plugs and nipple clamps and restraints!  Try putting those items on an insurance claim!  lol  They did catch him - and he is still doing time as far as i know - and him and his family is no longer living near me!

The violation of my personal space was the most difficult issue for me to deal with.  Had problems with trusting before that - now it is just magnified.....and no ADT system can make me feel totally safe anymore.

feastie -> RE: Robbed? (6/24/2006 6:29:28 PM)

My now ex-husband and I were burglarized when we'd been married a short time.  We went to a movie with friends a day or two after Christmas.  We came home to find the glass in the window next to the door broken.  We went inside and found a number of items stolen.  Our stuff was all new, as most of it had been wedding gifts.  They stole a new camera, an iron, a vacuum cleaner, the microwave, peanut butter, ground meat from the freezer, potatoes...

I feel like it was someone that lived in the apartment complex, as several apartments were broken into that night.  I felt sorry for them in a way, if they stole mundane things and food.  Nevertheless, it left me feeling quite unsettled and we made the complex manager transfer us to a new apartment in the front of the complex.

It's a horrible feeling of violation when someone has entered your home.  It will pass, however.
