Status: offline 		Has anyone here ever had their home broken into and been robbed?  We were last night.  i was at work, my fiance had gone to the store for less than half an hour and they pried open our back door.  We were lucky so little was taken.  He pulled in the driveway and they bolted out the back, dropping a printer down the stairs.

i was freaked out all the way home, on the verge of a panic attack making lists of things to look for.

Although we went and bought a real safe today and will be setting the alarm ALWAYS now, it's hard to feel safe.  i barely slept last night and am nervous about us both leaving the house again.  It's not so much the stuff...thank god he wasn't gone longer, there were things stacked by the back door they were about to take.  It's the violation of some stranger being in your house.  i won't even let the cleaning ladies over here once a month by themselves.

Has anyone ever had this happen to them?  What did you do to help yourself feel safe again?

Status: offline 		Yes, this has happened to both my house and my car at different times.  To be honest, it felt like I was raped, brutally.

With the car, all I could do was replace the broken window and make sure there was nothing valuable inside.  I also had to constantly remind myself to take the faceplate off the cd/radio to remove temptation.

For the house, it was much harder.  Looking back, I suppose I went a little overboard <chuckles>  All of the doors were replaced, steel casing and cladding with new very high quality locksets and deadbolts.  I replaced the downstairs windows with ones that were more secure, and made security bars for all of them.  I replaced the old wooden garage door with a metal one, and installed one of the new 'rolling code' openers.  I installed a whole house security system, with door and window intrusion alarms, motion sensors, motion activated outside lighting, and made sure to arm it every time the house was empty or everyone was asleep.  A 'real' safe was installed, and used.  Artwork was secured to the walls and wired into the security system.  I made sure to never give all my keys to valet parkers, and kept the registration locked in a box inside the console, which the ignition key would not work on. 

After all of this, and more, it still took awhile to become comfortable again and be able to sleep well.  It took even longer to become comfortable going away for more than a day at a time. 

Give it some time, do what you can to make your home and yourself more secure.  Life does return to normal, eventually.

Status: offline 		Take five slick, take ten if you got them.  I understand the violation and the panic.  The cops know now.  He or they will not be back for a while.  You must sit down calmly, with a notebook and go room to room, and shop like a burglar....list everything that is missing.  do it again. do it again. do it again.  Consider if you have any home movies or pictures or any other things(reciepts and paperwork)  with views of what was stolen.  The alarm paperwork can wait.  Inform them. That will be protracted law in a civil suit.  Your insurance is the most near thing to think about.

I will not be pedantic about this, but they do not rob householders day after day, you ain't a bank.  You have time to reason.

Status: offline 		we're lucky they were only able to take a few things...my fiance pulled up as they were going through my jewelry upstairs and they took off.  All the rest of it was sitting by the back door, ready to head out.  i hope they broke their damn toe on the printer they dropped.

i know i know....it's still nervewracking to leave the house alone though.

No...the reason i was worried about the alarm paperwork is because if they took it, they might have had access to passwords (can't remember whether or not they were written down).  It was all just changed though, so that's no longer an issue.

Status: offline 		wally world sells little battery operated motion detector alarms that sound a very high decibel alarm. It is a good deterrent and will alert your neighbors.

Status: offline 		Never happeed to me but I have caught, detained and ermm handed over perps who attempted to on my home on several occasions in a passably good condition (well they could talk), along with the results of my interogation of them.... Ever thought just how narrow door ways are and how many times it is possible to run in to a door jam? Or how easy it is to fall down in your home? Have to do some redeigning for my next place. Next house has an ultra modern safe or panick room to keep Neets safe, and me an operational base...

My condolances for your intrusion and rapine. It is terrible that good people have to face that. It is also a pity that Police tend not to take these matters as seriously as they could or courts deal with offenders more harshly.... I honestly dont know how long it will take for you to fully recover if even. I do know that some folks just sell up and start over with a new home and new location.. Not everyone can do that .....

Status: offline 		it was certainly a wake up call for my fiance...who didn't set the danged alarm because he wasn't going to be gone long, and who hasn't always locked the top deadbolt unless i remind him....he's taking this so much more in stride than i am.   Wake up call to anyone though!!! It doesn't matter if you're leaving for 5 minutes, if you have an alarm, set it!!!

Yeah i know....they came, took the report and dusted for fingerprints, then saying that they weren't able to lift any from the broken printer or doorknob they came in.  i guess i thought fingerprinting was a pretty advanced thing and they'd be able to find something if it was there.

Alright, here goes....going to attempt the leaving the house thing.

This happened to me way back in the 70's when i was living in California.  Went away for the weekend, came back to the apartment....not one thing was left.  The thieves took everything.........it was like walking into an apartment that was for rent, the only thing there was carpet.  I still believe that the guy i was seeing at the time had something to do with it.  
It was rough, i had to start from scratch again.........but i told myself that i would never be a victim again.  I would never be afraid to be in my own home again.  I am also much older and wiser, have learned many things along the way........the home i live in now is armed in many ways........and so am i, always. 
My home is the only place on earth i feel safe, i refuse to let anyone take that away from me.  I hope you find your peace again....it does take time, but it will happen.

Status: offline 		we had our home robbed after a fire.  that was the worst thing that ever happened.  not that they took our stuff.  but that they took my nieces stuff.  she was only 3months old at the time.  i felt so angry and like others violated.  they stole from a child.  that just changed my whole perspective and lowered my opinions of people.  fortunately TIME heals all wounds.  you'll start to feel safe again.  not now...but eventually.

Status: offline 		I tell ya the best alarm system has 4 legs and a nice set of teeth. When I lived in the city I had people attempt to break in but they couldn't get past the pair of  125lb Dobermans, nor the 200lb owner with a gun in her hand.

I don't know if you like dogs or not, but you don't have to use passwords with them, they don't go down if the power goes out and they will protect you and your property. Most people are more frightened of  dog then they are an alarm system.

Status: offline 		About twenty years ago, the house I was living in was burglarized. Even worse, I knew who did it, but couldn't prove it. After awhile you get over it, but it was a major drag at the time.

Status: offline 		Twice when I lived in London and most of my friends in London have been burgled at some point and I had my car stolen twice and broken into of six other occassions. The sense of hopelessness and personal violation is far worse than the monetary value of the stuff that was stolen. The car was no big deal but it just added to the feeling of one can't do anything about it.

At the time I was working in the probation service and one of the offenders told me a good reason why just about all of the domestic alarm systems on the market are useless against the professional burglar but I was just a victim of opportunists I believe though my appartment was alarmed the burglar just by-passed it somehow. I bought a new up to date alarm system and light timers so various times the lights would go on and off when I was out to make people think I was in. It appeared to work but maybe it was just luck.

Got back within moments of them leaving. Went through the house with a handy 2X4 checking it out.

I got over it quick though. I redid the doors to make it a very noisy hard proposition to get in. And key cylinders on both sides of the deadbolts, so if they want to cart stuff out, they have to work for it, not just open the door from the inside.

Windows are impossible to proof, unless you want to lock shutters and such every time you go out. If they want to get in bad enough, they will. An alarm is the best protection, especially if you are home when the breakin occurs. That is the main thing! Enough noise and trouble to a breakin if you are there. Steal the stuff, fine. But an alarm and panic buttons are the best safety for you. A safe room is good. Bedroom with solid door, phone line, interior shutters on the window. Panic room. Lock in, phone out, wait.

Don't freak out about being robbed. Check out the statistics. Physical harm/death from robbery is a very small percentage of the bad things that hurt people. It is a major piss off. But it isn't really as terrible a vulnerability as it feels at the time. ( Certain neighbourhoods withstanding ).

Don't let them steal your piece of mind.

My ex husband used to leave his truck door open on the passenger side every night... I don't mean unlocked, I mean OPEN. We lived in an area where things came up missing all the time. He carried some expensive tools in his truck... but, we had a 250 Rot that was sure the truck was his mobile dog house. That's why the door stayed open at night. Yes, someone did attempt to reach into the truck to take some of his tools... once... and only once. They were met with teeth and fur.
 
Beyond that, each time we have moved we have made it very obvious when carrying in our guns. We are well armed. Only once in well over twenty years have I had someone ignorant enough to try and from what I heard later on he was nearly pissing his pants staring down the barrel of that 20 guage shotgun.. I know this because I knew the parents of one of the boys I caught in my house in the middle of the night. I told him that I expected to hear from his parents in the morning... and I did. Probably the best thing to ever happen to that kid... he was literally scared straight.

Status: offline 		Nope flimsy doors and windows everything of value is in a safe imbedded in concrete. The safe is very good, any one who messes with it will wind up in ER.

I did not feel violated.  More mad.

I have a lovely doggie.  Pure German sheppard. She would kill -

Ok- get yourself some dead bolts.  Dont have valuables easy to find.

During a homes invasion- the first place a monster will go- is for kitchen knife.  So get rid of them.

Technically you were burglarized.  [robbed is when you are present]

Get yourself a nice doggie.
