This is the kind of thing that makes the life of a fisherman worthwhile.

I don't think that shark was more than 6'-8' long. Still, I don't think I want to be paddling out in the Pacific in a teeny little kayak. Not unless I got some grenades and a bang-stick. I wonder if you could bowfish them. I've done some stand-up canoeing, and you see celebs on those paddle boards all the time. Sink one in, and go for an old-fashioned Nantucket sleigh ride!

"Kayaking in the ocean is like bicycling in the African savannah". Hmmm. That comment kind of struck me, certainly in relation to *that particular bit* of the ocean.

I've fished in the ocean out of a kayak. Hooked a tarpon but lost it.[X(]

Glad it was him and not me cause I would have pee'd in my pants.

I prefer fishing ... standing on a bank with a cane pole and a container of worms ... thank you. [:)]

An onshore angler caught a 10 foot mako shark somewhere off the coast of Florida, pulled it in from the surf line. This was after dark so it was probably feeding. Makos are sort of rare, they figure this one weighed about 550 pounds. At least the guys revived it and put it back after they'd taken the picturs...hopefully, the shock of the catch didn't kill the shark. And yeah, makos are known to attack humans. They didn't release the location of the catch because of some fishing contest coming up.....fishing for sharks......what a shame. No telling how many the yahoos will kill for sport.

The guys I used to work with were all ex-Navy, and they said they'd fly up the coast in choppers, and if people knew what was barely a mile offshore in the water, they'd NEVER go back in the water again. And there have been reports all winter about whites in the waters here that have come south from the upper northeast waters.

Personally, I think they are beautiful animals that should be protected all over the world. I loved "Jaws" but that movie was like a death knell for the whites. I would love to dive with one, unbaited and unprovoked just to see it up close. In a cage of course...I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid!

And I don't think that was a tiger....they are distinctively marked, and their heads are more square. Either way, the guy's lucky the fish didn't decide to test the taste of his kayak.....no way would I be out on the ocean in something that tiny!

Math Problem: Ratios
If the people in this photo are 6 feet tall; how big is the fish?

Second Question: What are those two potential Darwin Award
winners doing outside the cage?

I have been to the ocean one time and that when I was moving to New Orleans back in '06. Stopped by Crystal City in TX and waded in the Gulf for a few minutes.

As to boats, I want an airboat to go on the Sulfur river, getting catfish on lines. Also some gators since it is hunting season in this area. Blame Swamp People on the History channel for wanting to go get gators.

I don't know.

How close is the cage to the camera, and how close is the Great White to the camera?

If the divers are looking at the shark, it is much closer to the camera than they are. If they are looking at anything else, WTF?

Interesting collection of propeller scars on the beast. Looks like at least two encounters.

If you want to check out a larger version of the image you can do so here:

National Geographic Shark Photo

The diver on top of the cage is trying to entice the Great White closer by
holding out a fish by the tail.  The shark is clearly closer than the divers
but not a lot closer.  You can see the light on the lower area of the sharks
"chin" for lack of a more accurate phrase.

The shark is close enough and big enough to take one of those divers off
the top of that cage if it felt like it.  As far as the divers looking at the shark.
What else would you be looking at?

Hillwilliam -> RE: We need a bigger boat (4/11/2013 8:03:49 PM)

That's probably not prop scars.
That White looks like female (I cant see claspers on the anal fins)
Shark courtship incudes biting.

I guess we're not the only species into the 'kink' thing, huh? My only question is, who took that picture? If it were a free diver, I want to buy him/her a drink for having a pair of stone cold ones.

I think they are chums... [:)]

That was awesome.

The Photographer's name is David Litchfield.  A little
Goggle turned up these links.

An article about him and an interesting photo he got of
the inside of a great white's mouth when it bit the camera
out of his hands.  Here:

Deep Dive With David Litchfield

A MailOnline Article showing more photos from the same dive
as the original photo.  In the interview the shark is identified as
being 5 meters long.  Quote:

'The shark in the picture is a five-metre female
and the marks down her side were not caused by a
boat's propeller but are more than likely love bites - literally:
males, being shorter than females, have to bite on when they copulate.'

Spirited....that was so bad that I just woke 2 cats up with the groan!

Yeah, I have to agree with Hilly, that's probably a bite mark. But I'd guess she's at least a 16 footer. And absolutely beautiful. There probably isn't any chum in the water to excite the shark, unbaited, the sharks are quite calm. I remember seeing a show on Shark Week about the sharks of the Faralon Islands near California. It's a seal and sea lion birthing place, and the researchers there would go out and film the hits on the mammals by the sharks, and their boat was a tiny little rowboat type with what looked like a trolling motor on it. Even them being in the water with several sharks after a bite, the animals were still quite calm. They'd check out the guys in the boat, but never showed any hostility or attempts to attack it. That would be such a cool thing to do!

Yeah, ok, so I'm a bit of a shark geek.....[8|]
