I think the parents need to be prosecuted for child abuse.

that is so not nice
seems to me that they did a very admirable job in raising this young man.
in addition it strikes me that no one here really appreciates this sport.

as a result I am going to boycott the forums for a few more months lol

Do you really think a 14 year old boy should be playing in the masters? I don't care how good he is there is no maturity. Its like a beautiful 14 year old girl dressing like a Victoria Secret model and marching down a runway. His parents are just in it for the money.

Nice has nothing to do with it. If he is that good in a few years when he can handle the celebrity he can take his place on the circuit.

Tiger Woods did not enter his first professional tourney until he was 20.

Emotionally I see your point.
But His parents are not pimping him out sexually as you suggest.

There is a HUGE difference between someone playing professional golf, and someone walking a runway in lingerie.

By your statements, that means that there would never be a movie or a television show with someone under the age of 18. It's ridiculous.

Yeah, not really the same thing. The kid's got talent. He's clearly got enough of it that he can compete at the highest levels. Why shouldn't he? Because he's not emotionally mature enough to handle it?

You don't know if he's emotionally mature enough to handle it or not. There are lots of people who are twice his age who can't handle the money and fame. Just because the average 14-year-old couldn't do it doesn't mean that a person who's been in the spotlight from an early age can't.

No 14 year old is mature... or ...as mature as they will be. You claim I don't know how mature he is...will you don't either. So I think it best to follow common sense.

But just my opinion of course.

Butch

But just because your common sense says he shouldn't be permitted to participate, doesn't mean your common sense makes any sense.

You aren't as mature at 18 as you will be at 21, at 21 not as much as you will be at 25, and so on and so on.

For real. A bunch of guys in ugly pants beating the hell out of a little white ball and now there has to be a maturity test?

Gimme a break already.

Then we should ban all child prodigies from playing music, competing in chess etc in public?

The kid played well enough to make it to the finals, despite the pressure.

Julie Andrews sang at the London Hippodrome when she was 12.

I loved the answers from the other golfers asking them what they were doing at his age.

He appears to be a nice young man.  His father is there with him so he's well taken care of.  He has talent.  It's great for him to have the experience of playing the Masters before becoming professional.  I will assume he'll change his status to professional in 2 to 4 years.

I agree ...I seem to be the minority position on the issue but I believe history shows the problems so called prodigies often have later in life. Just look at the entertainment industry for examples.

Their brains and skills are far beyond their social development. They often end up with a false view of life and the world in general.

As I say if he is as good as claimed he will still be good in a few years when he social skills catch up with his physical ones.

I can't seem to recall Julie Andrews having lots of adjustment issues, or Jodie Foster.

I think "modern fame" often has the potential for issues, but many of the people you are thinking of in Hollywood and the entertainment industry were usually very poorly supervised or totally controlled by the studio to disastrous results (Judy Garland).

Since you mentioned Tiger Woods as an example of how things should be done, I am guessing you forgot that his fame came much, much earlier (age 2)

Come on Butch,he is playing as an ametuer .
It is obvious ,by dint of his talent, what his career path will be....why should he not get the exposure and the experience that comes with doing this at such a young age.
So yes,and emphatically so,he should be playing in the Masters.
Not only playing by the way but he won the Ametuer cup that comes with being the lowest scoring non pro
Good for him

Wain one minute here...there is no need to denigrate the whole sport in order to defend this 14 year olds right to play it.
Please, please please show some respect for men with immense talent

So you should not be permitted to participate in the Olympics until you are 18, or perform in any way (acting, singing, musician, etc.) until you are 18? That's too ridiculous to even think about.
