...should we just shoot it down on principle?

If it were me and it were targeting us or our allies I'd shoot massive silos of missiles at him and knock his short ass off his high chair. I'd make sure the lines of communication were open should he live through it. He could come back to the table so we can work things out. Or he can shoot at our people and be flattened.

WantsOfTheFlesh -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 11:46:32 AM)

Who is 'we'? I suspect it would be a race to see if Japan, the US, or South Korea toasts it first.

If some bloke in a fishing boat doesn't take it out with a catapult first.

Oh, I don't know... maybe the principle that when a missile lands, it generally kills a bunch of people?

Well, China has missles. Should we apply the same principle there? First strike and all?

just for the sake of clarity . . . . what principle?

If you can't pick it up from the context of the first few posts, Vince, you ain't gonna get it anyway.

Thanks for the non-answer, Rich.

All this brave war talk. Same shit we heard about Saddam. He's a danger to us. We have to hit him first. What benefit did that gain us? You evidently have no memory of the last war on the Korean peninsula.

MagisterLudi -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 2:54:34 PM)

If the missile is targeted to somewhere in the ocean, then don't worry about it. shooting it down only lets North Korea have more information about how we detect and then shoot down it's missiles. Why give them that information (essentially) for free? We should keep that information to ourselves until it is useful, like when a missile is targeting the US or and ally. Then after shooting the missile down, we would be totally justified in obliterating all of the major cities in North Korea.

Look to your words in post 24, and see if anything in that ridiculously false equivalency might give you a clue as to why I'm not wasting my time on your attempts to contribute.

mnottertail -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 2:57:45 PM)

It woudn't give them any information not freely available on the internet.

They have been playing with nuclear stuff since 65.  I will be nuclear waste from the death of the earth before they get one off the pad.

PeonForHer -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 3:37:29 PM)

FR

Jeremy Paxman, one of the UK's most respected political commentators, gives his view on Kim's nuclear threat. (Think Sheer Khan in The Jungle Book - I usually do when I see Paxman.)

It's probably just as well that they don't pick up his shows in N. Korea.

Ever go scrolling around North Korea on Google Earth, or take the time with a smuggled roll of photos that popped up in an email? How much worse can we make it?

Any threat of where Unboy's path will lead needs to be something that pentrates directly into his luxury bubble of power and privilege. When he fires off a missile to celebrate his grandpa's birthday, blowing it out of the sky before it gets a 3/4 mile off the ground might, might, get through to him that we aren't buying his bluff. Or it could be an even more dangerous escalation. It's one of those appealing ideas, but risky as hell.

We know exactly what Kim wants. Not just a seat at the grownups table, but direct negotiations with the US. He wants Obama to call him, and thinks throwing shit in the air is the way to make that happen.

The problem is that IE 3 is very slow and has problems displaying most websites......

mnottertail -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 3:53:33 PM)

My comments were solely based on nuke, just to blast a missle out of the air for GP?  Nope not me, especially when we were officially and diplomatically butthurt when
China did it to a sattelite (one of their own), as not at all cricket in war.

Nevertheless, it aint a matter of us getting his attention, he wants ours.   Here is the cycle since we got involved in Korea.  Their entire diplomatic repertoire consists of the following:

1) Realize that country is a shit hole, people are starving to death, and no one will give aid because it's a fucked up dictatorship.
2) Artificially manufacture a crisis using missiles, nukes, whatever. Threaten to turn Seoul and the US into a "Sea of Fire". (It's always a sea of fire, except when it's a lake of fire).
3) Agree to negotiate back down to the pre-crisis status quo. Negotiate to receive foreign aid in return for not acting so batshit crazy.
4) Give food aid to Army and high-ranking public officials. Regular people continue to starve to death.
5) Lather, rinse, repeat.

Think of these guys as the sterotypical Korean mom and pop store owners in the hood.  Been that way since Ike.

Hell, even the russkies couldn't get along with those assholes.

Then it must be a bitch with their windows 8 nuclear operating systems. I understand they are trying to roll back to windows 95.

I don't need your permission to contribute, Rich. When will you learn that?

But I take it by "false equivalency" you mean we have one principle for a nation we perceive as weak and a different principle for a nation we perceive can really do us harm. And never mind destroying maybe hundreds of thousands of lives just because we can. Too bad your OP is cloudy on the issue of principle. Not surprised however.

You don't need my permission to post, Vince, but I decide who I want to talk to. [:)]

And no. By false equivalency, I mean comparing a stable state that has earned a place among the serious nations of the earth, to a condemned and pathetic rogue state that want to get there by bluster and threats.

If that comparison is what you wish to argue, then you ain't gonna make the cut for what's worth my time, especially on a day where I'm popping in during breaks in rebuilding the fence that blew over last week.

mnottertail -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 5:29:05 PM)

Perhaps you should get your fence in a stable state.  I am unsure that there is a stable state on this globe, at the mo.

Maybe you operate with more negative stereotypes than I do, Ron, but I've known those Korean grocers to help feed the hungry, which is something the Kim clan hasn't seemed to worry about much.

TheHeretic -> RE: If North Korea fires off a missile... (4/13/2013 5:38:46 PM)

Like North Korea, Ron, I think the rot goes too deep to actually repair. I'll get it securely propped, and it will hold for a while, but realistically the whole damn thing needs to be ripped out, and replaced with something better conceived than what was built to begin with. [;)]

Best case, short term, would be for China to topple Unboy, install their own puppet government for a buffer state, and send the flood of refugees they don't want into the south.

Think Kerry might be passing that word to Beijing, or will it take as many fuckups in this job for him to learn when to duck, as it did in Vietnam?
