Status: offline 		As a general rule, I don't communicate with anyone I meet on CM in any way other than CMail until we are about to meet in person. One, privacy Two..I don't have the attention span to sit and type back & forth. So, I am baffled why so many people automatically ask in their first or second email if I have Yahoo (as I tell them..of course I do! I just don't use it much). Does anyone know WHY? I understand the trying to get me to Skype (like that will happen!! again..no attention span plus I have to put on makeup..). Am I missing something here? Am I, like my 80yr old aunt who does not "get" the whole "email" thing!

Status: offline 		I use it, and find a lot of others do too because it allows for quicker and easier conversation. CM emails are slower.. and I prefer to get to know them better before I give out my phone number.

On Yahoo Messenger, I can IM chat and do voice calls through the computer if I wish to. You can video chat too, but I don't do that unless it is someone I am in a real relationship with...

Different strokes.... I love it. But then again, I'm a texter as well.... but I screen a lot through the IM and imagine other people do as well.

Status: offline 		Chat on Cm doesn't work well for a lot of people and email is slow. Plus they can only talk to you if you're on CM.

IM is instant and will pop up even if you're not on CM. (And even if the timing is amazing crappy)

A lot of the scammers use YIM because you can't report them for what happens off of CM and direct contact increases the chances that you're someone that will fall for the scam.

Status: offline 		Most of the profiles that mention Yahoo here seem to be extremely shady. The few replies I've gotten on Cmail haven't asked about any other means of contact. I suspect nobody wuvs me (note the big crocodile tears)

I don't ask for it immediately, but I will generally ask for it within about 10 messages (while also including a "I understand you may not be ready for this yet, and that's fine, but if you want to contact me on Yahoo, my username is ********).

What's the appeal? The conversation is a little more real-time and flowing than exchanging cmail, and without requiring me to devote all of my attention to the conversation. I can watch TV or Netflix while having the conversation, for instance. That way I don't feel like I wasted my time if the conversation breaks down in short order. And I almost always have my computer next to me anyway, since it's a laptop, so I'm not doing anything special.

Then again, I'm 25. I've spent the last 10 years or so looking at computer screens for 10+ hours a day. I'm used to it. People from previous generations haven't done that, and it might feel like more of a time commitment to them.

Status: offline 		Well, I'm going to be 49 this year, and I am the same way as you when it comes to YIM. After sufficient cmail exchanges, I like to switch to an instant messenger before going to phone. With instant messages, like you said, I can watch a movie or do other things while "chatting" with this person.

10+ hours a day on the computer since you were 15? Honey, you really need to get out more!

Status: offline 		OP,I like to use YIM after a few CMails but before the phone calls.Once you feel the other person is worth the time,I like the back and forth flow when using a messenger.I feel you get a better sense of the other person[if they are being honest anyway] because they don't have a lot of time to think over what they think you might want to hear.Emailing a person ,they have time to think over questions and answers while on messenger you can tell if someone is stopping to think of the best answer instead of what they might really think.Others might feel differently but I find messenger to be a faster way of communicating and finding out if the other might be one you feel comfortable talking on the phone with before a face to face meeting is planned.

Status: offline 		Thank you everybody.. To me, because of my ADHD, nothing moves "fast enough" to replicate real conversation. I have been known to type a question or answer..and then forget to come back for 3 days..

A lot of that was for either work or school, so it's not as bad as it sounds. And I'm doing much better now that I'm not in school anymore.
