jlf1961 -> I need help, and I am already seeing a shrink, so that is not the help I need. (4/16/2013 2:23:19 PM)

I am trying to help my great nephew develop a taste in good rock and roll music.

To that end, I need some help. So for all those with a healthy love of great rock and roll, I would like a list of your favorite 80's rock bands and songs.

Also I need to know the name of the song from the 80's where a man comes out of a lipstick in the video?

I already have a play list of 21 songs on you tube, he really enjoys videos. And I have gotten him away from wanting to watch the Gungham style video every five minutes.

I don't know what video you're talking about, I didn't have MTV very often as a young mother.

Some of my favorite bands were Hall and Oats, Blondie, Duran Duran, Survivor and Earth, Wind and Fire.

From the 80s? That's going to require me to really think, lol. My tastes for good Rock n Roll tend to differ from others. The usual list contains some of these:

Springsteen
Stones
The Who
Pink Floyd
Rush
Aerosmith
Queen
Eric Clapton
Heart

Ok, so I did a quick search and found this:

Top 100 Rock Artists of the 80s

Didn't the lead singer of Twisted Sister always wear lipstick? M

If we're talking real guitar-driven rock, allow me to do one from each decade (60s-90s) and then, I'll just throw some stuff in:

60s - Frijid Pink's version of "House Of the Rising Sun"

70s - Nazareth - "Hair Of the Dog"

80s - Iron Maiden - "Hallowed Be Thy Name"

90s - Joe Satriani - "Summer Song"

Let's face it, the 2000s, generally, cut a musical fart.

I am very partial to some of the harder "hair bands" (if you will). I like Judas Priest (and recommend "The Sentinel" because it shows how poetic Rob Halford is), Iron Maiden (Anything really but "Number Of the Beast" is chock full of good stuff. There's only one "filler" and even that's a decent song), Queensryche ("The Lady Wore Red". Skip that "Empire" crap), Rush (My band got it's name from a song on 2112 but farewell to Kings was kick-ass, too), Dio (Anything off the first 2 albums), KISS (I've been a KISS fan since they're first album but I STRONGLY recommend "Detroit Rock City" and "Master & Slave" and there's a really good cover version of "Strutter" on the "KISS My Ass" tribute album), Metallica (Pick one but I LOVE "Seek And Destroy"), Twisted Sister (Stay Hungry album), and we can't forget Motley Crüe's early stuff.

I hope that was helpful.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Dee Snider and all the members of Twisted Sister wore makeup. But so did Kiss. BTW, Dee still has a syndicated radio show on called the House of Hair. The site even has a section so you can find out when it's broadcast in your area and on what station. In Philly, it's on Sunday night at 10 pm on 93.3 WMMR. No, I don't listen to it every Sunday [sm=angel.gif]

I am loving this thread \M/

Anything by Dio.
King Diamond (for the deep Satanic rock)
The Mentors (Sex Slave)

He is very entertaining, and as it turned out, a nice guy. Read he's been married forever.

I've enjoyed music from: Motley crue, Poison, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, John Cougar Mellencamp, etc. I can't imagine your nephew wouldn't find music and videos from these groups that he doesn't love.
I think the 80s had the best music, compared to 90s, and thereafter. M

thanks for the help. Damian does enjoy most of the bands listed, both the videos and the music I play on the stereo.

At his age Jeff, some of the lyrics will be frightening. Do you really want to explain the meaning behind I Shot the Sheriff? Because I don't think it's appropriate. Try Raffi, best all time kid musician I know of.

I don't know how old the nephew is, but I'm happy to report they are teaching a lot of history in school, and I'm relatively sure it won't be a shocker.
Probably like you though, I like to keep the innocent that way, as long as possible, without putting them in danger of being too simple. M

P.S. I love U2, and of course Bob Marley. I consider theirs, timeless music.

erieangel -> RE: I need help, and I am already seeing a shrink, so that is not the help I need. (4/17/2013 5:04:34 PM)

How could I have forgotten about Bob Marley???

Especially when I was reintroduced to him by one of my first clients when I started my job?

Imagine an 18 y/o reintroduced me to Marley 4 years ago...

PeonForHer -> RE: I need help, and I am already seeing a shrink, so that is not the help I need. (4/17/2013 5:48:09 PM)

Good though he was, Bob Marley hardly qualifies as 'rock and roll', does he?
