It's odd. It almost seems wrong to say that it's good that this is probably just an industrial accident, rather than an incident where someone was *trying* to harm people. For once, it's not something based on malice.

Status: offline 		The Exxon plant here in Beaumont had an explosion and fire earlier today, 12 injured. LP, at times like this, my initial thoughts head straight towards "was it intentional?", so yes, it's a relief when it isn't.

The news here said 25 tons of ammonium nitrate, so yeah, it's on par with a small military bomb, innit?

Just ain't the US' week, it seems.

ETA: Local media seems to suggest 5~15 confirmed, 60~70 unconfirmed.

More like a complaint about the zoning. You'd expect such a plant to have to buy the potential blast range and be prohibited from using it for residential buildings. But, yeah, somewhat rhetorical.

Status: offline 		Looks like a middle school and a nursing home were nearby. The nursing home was destroyed, but had already evacuated at that time, I think. The plant apparently didn't have a permit, nor did they qualify for one, is what the BBC said. One tank is potentially still a concern, as I understand it.

Oddly enough, apparently not every city has zoning regs.. I am in Houston right now and there is no zoning here, they use deed restrictions but those may only last 20 or 30 years.. here in older areas there are industrial buildings mixed with residential, commercial, etc.. I was surprised by that when i came here, this city is the only one I know of that doesnt have zoning, but again it could depend on how old the city/town is and zoning can change over the years/decades..

Zoning is only one consideration tho.. lots of dangerous chemicals are shipped by truck or rail so if you live near a freeway or train track, all it takes is for an accident with one of those for you to be at risk.. not just from explosions but toxic chemicals in the air that can damage your lungs or kill you.. or the gas main in your front street or in neighbors house to blow up.. gas lines scare me.. and its not unheard of that a housing development was built near/on a dump site, with all sorts of weird chemicals mixing around either (like Love Canal)..
