Well people its finally happened. I am going to actually go and meet with people of this very same lifestyle, that has been eating at my heart and soul for awhile now. I am nervous but was invited by someone i had met (a submissive) to come and sit in on a conversation of submissive/slave relationships. It will be at a local restaurant and it by no means will have any "play" or such....mostly talk. This friend told me it would be a great way to meet others and maybe learn some things that i have questioned for awhile. Question for you all, and bear with me, is do I just listen? Would it be ok you think if i asked questions or should i just sit back the first time and just listen and learn? Thanks for your replies in advance.

Blushes, if you feel comfortable talking then by all means ask questions. A munch is not a party by any account. It is merely a place where like minded people go to chat. About anything under the sun. Sometimes BDSM does not even come up in conversation. Other times it comes up quite frequently.
There are several people I see at my munch who I don't see all month long. I consider them dear friends so naturally they have to get me caught up on what has been happening in their lives since we last saw one another.
On the other side of the coin. Year's ago when I was at a munch. A woman came, it was her first time. So nervous she sat there for half of the time just shredding napkin after napkin. I noticed her and moved to the other side of the table. She told me she didin't know if she could talk or what. Anyway, it turned into a nice friendship over the years.
If you feel more comfortable just listening by all means do so. Although you are going with a friend. I don't think she will allow you to just sit in silence. She will want to talk to you.

Ask all the questions you want, Kate - and if anyone doesn't like it, stick your tongue out at 'em.

Have fun -

Well it was last Saturday and I enjoyed myself a lot. Got to meet people in the lifestyle and (GASP) they are just like any NORMAL people lol. More than I expected for a first time, they made me feel very welcome and we didn't just talk about the lifestyle but other things as well. When we did talk about the lifestyle, it just seemed so natural for me to join in on the conversations, I was surprised at that lol. They invited me to join them again next month and I am looking forward to it. Thanks for your help and your interest in finding out how it went...I might add i did meet one person and well...who knows[:)]

hahahaha! this was me and my Dom at our very first munch! we were soo scared we just sat around the bar for 20 minutes before going and sitting with the group, then it was napkin shredding time!! An hour or two later we got to meet some very nice people and surprisingly, they were VERY happy to see some younger faces in the crowd for a change who were interested in the lifestlye. Glad you had a good time Blushes!

Dear god no!!! You poor child you've been deluded! RUN!!! It's actually a covert vanilla intervention!!! We're all freaks and wierdos, you should know that by now! Where's Happy Harry, the seedy looking guy in the trenchcoat who breaths heavy and always has at least on hand in his pocket? Where's Psycho Sue, the gothy punk with dozens of facial piercings and the disconcerting habit of sharpening knives? And what about Mimsy and Flimsy, the appallingly flaming boot-licking catamites that flirt with anything that might have a penis? And of course, Bubba, the drooling mental midget who just thinks yer purty...

If you do not see these stereotypes, you have not met the real leather people. Run! Flee! Don't look back, you might turn into a pillar of salt!

(obviously I'm just kidding. I'm glad things went well for you.)

*giggles* thanks all ;)

houndguy -> RE: First "Munch" (11/26/2004 2:43:10 PM)

Glad you enjoyed yourself. I remember being nervous the first time I ever attended a Munch/workshop.

I found the people to be "normal" and fun to be with. Ever since then I've tried to attend as many munches as possible.

Now comes the hard part. Your first "play party" (insert evil laughter here)!

happypervert -> RE: First "Munch" (11/26/2004 7:57:37 PM)

Well, I guess it is a bit late to help you, but Jay Wiseman posted this guide to munches in the ssbb newsgroup. So I'll put it here anyway in case anyone else is interested.
