Couple of hours ago, shots were fired outside building 32 (Stata). The cordon has been extended to include building 76 (Koch). Injuries have been reported. Media here report officer down (ETA: officer shot on the scene, later succumbed to the injuries). Police are still sweeping the campus and MIT advises everyone to stay indoors. The MIT emergency information page (link) is mostly for people on campus, though.

Clearly not a good week. Anyone know what's up with this, or is it just that time of the year?

IWYW,

It does seem like the crazies are afflicted with spring fever, doesn't it?

It's the two marathon bombing suspects. One was shot and killed and they're searching in Watertown for the second suspect.

Yeah. I used to live in that neighborhood. Lots of houses and places for that guy to hide.

I've already heard that one suspect was killed in an explosion. (HLN) The other on the run.

And other people are arduously involved in spring cleaning...

I'm kind of curious what they were doing at the site of the former radiation laboratory at MIT.

Place probably still has a lot of stuff you wouldn't want to see in a bomb.

Most 'radiation labs' are dedicated to detection equipment (I worked in one some in grad school). I'd bet they didn't know that though. If you want to make a dirty bomb, you need an old X-ray machine which would be full of Cesium 137. Think Veterinarian office.

Yup. And I said former.

Certainly easier than many other alternatives. Might find some cobolt in the cancer lab, though.
