SadieSublevel -> Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 11:08:01 AM)

Hey! I'm Sadie, I have question. This may be off topic, sorry I cant find the answer else where on this site. I have been communicating with someone, One of their messages had a posting that said "this member has set of the bulk mail filter". What exactly does that mean? Does it mean he sent me too many messages, or did he send too many people messages all together. Like, is he emailing tons of people for this to happen??

Thanks for any input! Smiles.

Yes, it means his sending X number of emails triggered the CM system to consider what he was sending was spam to folks and subsequently you received that message. You can do what you like after that - respond to him or not, but you've had that message to warn you.

LadyPact -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 11:14:30 AM)

The person that you are engaging with has triggered the spam filter. Wonderful little feature that helps to prevent mass mailings and such.

It means he's sending enough emails to a number of people that are spam or have been reported. Don't be surprised when he suddenly drops from view when his mailing privileges have been suspended because he is annoying a significant number of members.

Edited to change tense.

Haha! Ok, I kind of thought so. I am glad that filter is there! Thanks everyone!

Signed,
Duly Warned! :)

Usually I'm fangs through the floor on spammers and scammers, but I'll throw in a "benefit of the doubt" anecdote. A few years ago, when I was finishing up my BA, I bought a textbook through a third party vendor using my school account. A couple weeks later, I get a call from the IT Nazi at the school. Apparently, someone zombied my email and it was cranking out thousands of pieces of spam every minute. That's another possibility to consider with this individual. But, keep your cards close to your chest in any event. Best of luck.

littlewonder -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 2:06:44 PM)

It doesn't do that here on Collarme.

the dude is just sending out emails to every single person on collarme. It's either someone desperate to get laid or looking for business.

You know, I've been thinking about this frequently, and I wonder if our (regular site users') constantly telling people to search facts before discussing what's on their minds, is what is causing very old threads to be ressurected.
Maybe we should lighten up, and let people begin discussions, if they don't see said discussion currently happening on the boards. M

littlewonder -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 2:23:01 PM)

I'm wondering if there can't be some kind of auto attachment to threads that are started that say something about if you are reading this and it is more than 3 months old, please do not respond but initiate a new thread; kinda like a signature that one can put in their emails and responses on here automatically. It might then cut down on the necros.

BlkTallFullfig -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 2:35:25 PM)

That is a lovely idea actually.
I was thinking that maybe year+ old threads could be locked, with the statement at the end saying, please start a new discussion, as no continued responses are permitted here. However that would be too much work for the apparently already overworked/understaffed crew here.

Back to the topic at hand:[8D]
Sorry OP that this happened after you'd wasted several emails to this cad. They usually spam me with first or second email, so I block them immediately. M

LafayetteLady -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/21/2013 6:52:15 PM)

I would take on the task of locking old threads. Of course, that would only be when I could actually get on to the boards, since access over the last week has sucked so bad.

It's interesting that collarme has this informal 3-month policy because the etiquette on most forums that I'm on is to post to existing threads, no matter how young or old, rather than starting yet another thread on the same or similar topic.

It makes sense, at least on technical forums, that you want the newbies to read what was already said on the topic before posting their clarification question.

But, of course, this is not the only place collarme is different than from the rest of the world ... :)

Rasciallymisty -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (4/22/2013 12:21:23 PM)

I just saw a post in intros earlier today that did have ....." this thread is more than 3 months old, please do not respond but initiate a new thread," and that it was locked. [:D]Maybe they are gonna start doing so because so many old threads are being brought back? Sorry for hyjacking here [:(]

"One of their messages had a posting that said "this member has set of the bulk mail filter"

I'm not certain because that isn't an actual message that CollarMe puts out.

wiermen -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (5/30/2013 10:07:01 PM)

I've been labelled a spammer for messaging a lot of people and I've been suspended a few times.
All I can say is;
I don't ever send friend requests and nine times out of ten, the recipients have stated quite clearly they want to talk.
Perhaps people on here should be more honest and selective. Their own Scatter gun technique is just provoking mine.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (5/30/2013 10:13:52 PM)

It isn't about friend requests, and you obviously sent out enough messages that people reported as spam that you got suspended.

Think before you write.

Darkfeather -> RE: Talking to Too many people? (5/30/2013 11:09:09 PM)

I believe the spam filter is automatic, not reported. And it is set off by a specific set of actions taken by the person in question, not just a large list of triggers. Anyone setting that spam filter off, most likely did so by spamming the mail system

Actually I think it works both ways. You send a certain number of letters within a short period of time, or you get a certain number of spam reports.

Having had messages from wiermen it didn't strike me as a copy-paste job which makes me think people are reporting him.

(and no, I didn't, before anyone asks)
