Inspired from the orchard thread:

Here in Massachusetts some municipalities offer discounted compost bins: http://www.mass.gov/dep/recycle/reduce/compgnt.htm

The Earth Machine is $109 at Home Depot but $40 from my Mom's town.

I was going to make one from a garbage barrel http://www.ehow.com/how_16876_make-compost-bin.html
but the lid cracked over the winter and, not having a wheelbarrow, I am using the trash barrel to haul leaves and sticks around.

If I hadn't found the compost bin at Mom's town, I was going to go with this from Amazon: Presto Products GKL0951-6 Geobin Composting System

The Earth Machine is animal proof - the above is flimsier and has no lid.

Anyone have any composting stories to share?

I haven't been able to install one yet. We just moved and the few good days of nice weather we've had I've been to busy cutting trees and shrubs down (starting over with basically a blank slate).

Once I get the time to squeeze it in somewhere, I'll install a 3 bin system:

In our rental, I used to have something sorta like your plastic tube one, except made with metal wire used to reenforce concrete. Compost is actually precious enough to me (especially with the semi-desert sand clay soils we got here) that when we moved, I moved all of my half finished compost with me. Despite it being covered by about 2 feet of snow by then and having to haul it several yard, through that snow, to the truck. Our city was kind enough to offer trash can/recycling bins a couple weeks before the move to the entire town, so I used 3 of those to load it all up to take.

I also moved about 2 tons of black dirt I had previously bought for my planters (back when my husband had promised me we where staying put for a few years). That stuff's worth it's weight in gold around here, or so it sometimes feels...

Many municipalities will give you compost for free if you just show up with your container and shovel. Since they chip and compost roadside trimmings.

Well, I suppose...
