He stopped loving her today was the first country album I ever purchased. He was country before it was cool. RIP

That was his best song, too, IMO.

My favorites of his were Golden Ring and Jet Set ( duets w/Tammy Wynette),
A Picture of Me Without You and The Grand Tour. The latter two were
co- written by George Richey who Tammy later married. Aaron Neville
also did a lovely version of Grand Tour. 'Heres the nursery oh she left
me without mercy, taking nothing but our baby and my heart.'

He almost passed on He Stopped Loving Her Today when it was
first offered to him. He thought it was to sentimental and over
the top. It's funny that it and Tammy's Stand By Your Man duke it
out for best country song in polls and stuff.

Keith Richards is a big Jones fan and old school country music in general.
He worked with Jones on some things. George Jones was one of
the last of the old school giants. Willie, Loretta and Dolly and Merle are
about all that's left. He was the real deal.

RIP George, I hope he has found peace with all his bouts with alcoholism.

kallisto -> RE: George Jones RIP (4/26/2013 5:55:54 PM)

I grew up listening to his songs. RIP

slaveluci -> RE: George Jones RIP (4/27/2013 12:05:00 AM)

I finally got to see him a couple years back and it was something to scratch of my bucket list. He was great and, as others have said, I hope he's finally found peace.........luci

IceColdBastard -> RE: George Jones RIP (4/27/2013 2:26:27 AM)

after he recorded he stopped loving her today he told Billy Sherill it was so sad it would never sell. It was also the only song to be CMA song of the year twice IIRC
