Oh God, no. I learned the hard way about helping friends get in the door a long time ago.

wwwwwaaaaaayyyyyy before the point you are at. As soon as they start causing the issues you are at, is where I stop associating with them. It doesn't go on any further than that.

I think it's time for you to talk to your boss or HR and get something done about this before it becomes complete chaos and armageddon breaks out at your place of employment.

I'm stealing this line. [8D]

I never give up.

This is a FLAW in my character, not a virtue.

I had an out of work experience once.

I came back though.

I am not sure about your input on her hiring but I can understand your desire for her to succeed. When I hired someone I always felt I failed in some way when they did not work out. It is the mark I think of a good supervisor. I liked to think I had good instincts on character but I learned over time it is just a crap shoot.

It is good that you made the attempt to straighten her out. I have had a few employees that did straighten out and excelled so the effort does pay off. But when the point is reached where you know the employee for what ever reason does not fit then letting them go is best for everyone even them. Just be sure you document performance from the beginning... then document more... that way there will be no backlash from corporate if you have that layer above you.

I'm going to steal that one for work. I have a supervisor and immature kids who are always twisting my words.

I see that people like this, and it is clever, but I don't agree. I think it's on me to communicate clearly. How I speak to my daughter is different than how I speak to my mother, how I speak to my coworker is different than how I speak to my friend. I do try to make myself understood.

I'm going to remember that one, in case I do wind up getting a call from HR. Thanks.

And I don't think it works well in defense to human resources, either. As an example (and I know this thread isn't about this in particular, but..) telling someone they look nice are the words out of your mouth. Telling someone they look nice and staring at them for 20 seconds is a different sentiment altogether. We do need to be responsible for how we are understood...especially in the workplace.

I thought you were in favour of gun ownership? What the f*** are guns for if not for blowing away w*****s like this?

You are a limp-wristed milksop liberal in disguise, TH. Do what must be done.

LOL. Hardly up to the standard where I'd contemplate cold-blooded murder, Peon, even if I do have a dear old friend with a backhoe he'd let me borrow. I have found myself daydreaming a little about a really savage caning though. [;)]

Absolutely true Kaliko but....you can be as clear as a summer rain and some will misunderstand you.

As a manager, it is your job to be as clear as you can be but...once the data has been transferred, your people have a responsibility...to translate that in to profits/better service/faster times, whatever.

Your responsibility is to do an exceptional job at transferring (not translating) appropriate customer/staff/employer data.

If they're good at their job, they will interpret it correctly, and even (hopefully) improve on what you transferred, and naturally, those that do, will advance.

It is not, however, your responsibility to constantly be educating them how to think. After about 25 or so, their parents and life's job is done with preparing them with the basics.

Through those first 25 years they had one additional responsibility....some took advantage of it (some didn't): Learn from each experience and translate that into skill sets.

Yes. Some wonderful thoughts being offered, but I have to say that the absolute best piece of advice I've had on this whole mess came from the wife.

She handed me a bag of gourmet, extra butter, microwave popcorn, and told me to keep it in my desk drawer for when the moment comes.

God, I married well. [:D]
