The thread on submissive v slave thing got me thinking: What is it to be 'collared'?

In my opinion, to be collared is to be owned.

And I have to add... that is a stunning pic!

Whatever you want it to be.

Most people use it to symbolize a serious commitment.

Yes when you are collared you are owned.  And uless it is agreed upon beforehand that the collered person will be shared usually off limits.

It means owned for me. When I first moved in with my Dom, he gave me a collar that I would wear for the first year we are together. During this time we will learn if we are truly compatible and if we really want the same things out of a TPE, D/s relationship. Once that year is up I will receive a new collar along with a ceremony that will signify that he owns me completely and that our commitment is one we hope will last forever.

I was owned before I was collared.  His collar came several months later, and represented a deeper commitment, and deeper meaning to ownership.  I was no longer "just" owned, I became loved, valued, and intended to be kept as his very special slave.

To me, being collared means I'm owned, and He's going to be keeping me around for a very, very long time.  Some people will say it's a commitment deeper than marriage, but I don't agree with that.  It may be similar to marriage, without the legal paperwork, but it's not any deeper of a commitment.

And I have to agree with Jewel... that pic is simply phenomenal.  Those expressive eyes...

collared is the public display of the personal relationship between two people, pure and simple.  it is that relationship being so intertwined or close that simply being called "owned" or "mine" doesn't do the relationship justice.  hense the collaring...

Having never been collared, I am assuming that it is being owned. That you have given yourself to your Dom wholey and completely.

This is a really good question.

Last week I had a discussion with a Dominant who believed that when a submissive said "My Dominant" that it indicated to him that the submissive was collared.  I disagreed. I believe that a sub can belong to a Dom without being collared.  A collar comes much later when both parties fully agree that this is a relationship that they want to persue long term.  So to me, being collared means that there is deep commitment that is formed between the dominant and submissive.  It's no longer just play or casual.

But unfortunately, I am not sure if my definition is correct.

To my Master and me, being collared is something very serious and very precious.  It was not done carelessly or lightly, we discussed it at length for months if not almost a year.  To us, it represents a commitment between us, whereby I become His slave and allow Him to set the limits in the relationship and in our play time.  He, in turn, agreed never to abuse that authority and never wield it like a weapon over me.  He uses His position as a means to help me grow as a person and as His beloved.  We had a very private collaring ceremony two months ago, where we made vows to each other, and I accepted His collar as a symbol of belonging to Him alone.

Before I was collared, I was curious about collaring as well (mainly about collaring ceremonies), but didn't know how to ask the question properly...  however I got some great advice.  Take a look and see what you think...
