Missokyst -> Weird maso medical question (4/28/2013 4:43:04 PM)

It has been over a week since my car was rear ended. I still don't have those mysterious neck pains people were insisting I may develop, but my elbow is still acting up.
I did have it x-rayed and they found it had fluid. Ok.. It has been a week and it still gets tired if I don't put it in a sling every few hours. It still is difficult to turn it outward and up. Now my problem. I am a maso. When I had it examined and the doctor was moving it in various directions I giggled. I mean really like the pilsbury dough boy, giggling. I know, maso's are not supposed to laugh when it is not sensual pain, but I am not the normal maso. If I am not crying from pain I giggle.
It really does not hurt badly. But it is uncomfortable and it is hard to do everyday things like fastening a seatbelt or opening a door. And if I have an itch on my face I have to lift the left arm with the right to hit the right spot. How do I express to to a doctor that my reactions are not typical? I just got the forms from the other companies claims department and many of the questions are leading toward how bad the pain is, how much it is effecting my job, and if I am entitled to getting money for time off from work.
Kinda hard to do since I am an independent contractor. And being a maso who giggles.. that is really hard to justify.

The giggles is sometimes caused by anxiety.
Perhaps you incorporate that?.. or explain that you have an atypical reaction to pain and sometimes it causes you to laugh/giggle.

We were just talking about the masochists who giggle thing last night when folks were here for the dungeon. [:D]

Does your doc know that you're kinky? If he does and this is a conversation that is in person, I would think you could explain it very much in the same way as you did here. Unfortunately, I'm at a loss for the best way to do it if you are dealing with an insurance form.

I'm sorry to hear that the elbow is still uncomfortable for you. Hope it feels better soon.

Edited - Ack! You're not your correction made.

tell them what you told us; pain makes you giggle and you kinda get off from pain so it's hard for you to really tell how bad the pain is. They may want you to get tests though to make sure you don't have some kind of nerve disease that causes your maso.

As for the insurance claim, take this up with the doctor first who will help you with the form since he most likely will want you tested like I said above.

You simply tell him they are typical for you. There are people who never feel any pain at all. Laughter is known to reduce pain.

Might as well be honest with your doctor, tell him you are a masochist and this is how you respond to pain.

Tell the ins boys about your arm getting tired just hanging at your side, so you wear a sling after a while. Tell them about how your range of motion is limited: "When I go to scratch my cheek I have to use the other arm to help." " it is uncomfortable and it is hard to do everyday things like fastening a seatbelt or opening a door. " "It is difficult to turn it outward and up."

I'm sure there is more than that, but I'm not going to put words in your mouth, I am just repeating what you have already said.

Re : Time off / independent contractor. If this injury buggers a job for you, AT LEAST make a claim for the difference it makes. It might be denied, it might not.

Best wishes.

Could your being a masochist indicate that it might be more of a problem than it actually is?

How long did they tell you to keep it in the sling? Did you do that, or are you taking it out of the sling regularly when it felt a little better and then back in when you overused it? I'm sure you don't need to be told this can inhibit the healing problem.

As someone who suffers from chronic pain, I can tell you that while I'm not crying in pain 24/7, it doesn't mean the pain doesn't exist, it simply means it is at a tolerable level.

So do you think you should have to suffer tolerable pain? Sure during the healing process, we have to endure some pain along the way, but the doctor should have given you an indication of how long you should be expected to deal with this, and if they haven't, you need to ask.

So yes, that means you need to go back to the doctor and get some more answers. If that fluid is not decreasing, you need to discuss options regarding how to make that happen. Years ago, I injured my knee and it swelled up like a basketball (ok a bit smaller, but it sure looked basketball sized to me). I was given pain killers, crutches and told to rest it. I did, and the bulk of the swelling went down, but I still have quite a bit of pain. I finally realized that the swelling itself was causing the pain, and I had the doctor drain the fluid that had accumulated. The relief from doing that was amazing. Perhaps this can be an option, I don't know, just putting it out there.

In the meantime, I suggest you stop taking it out of that sling.

Missokyst -> RE: Weird maso medical question (4/28/2013 11:04:00 PM)

I suppose it is possible. I am accustomed to pain and do tend to ignore it if its not "I just want to jump off a cliff" type. I don't take pain pills, not even ibuprofen unless it is nearly intolerable.
As far as the sling goes the prompt care doc said wear it except when I am sleeping or driving. And to ice the injured area which I have done.
I do take if off when it gets too hot or it starts making the permanant injury to my right shoulder start to hurt from the pressure. For me it has been a bit of a balancing act in managing pain.
The swelling is down. I don't feel a pocket of liquid on the elbow anymore. The fingers are mostly back to normal, except the pinky, ring and middle finger but those only bother if my arm is starting to get tired. I can open and close my hand now, but the grip is not as strong as it had been.
I am going to see about another xray this week. It would be great if draining fluid would be an option.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Weird maso medical question (4/29/2013 7:41:01 AM)

When my knee was drained, most of the swelling had gone done, so maybe it is possible.

I understand the sling being hot, and worse causing pain to an older injury, but you really need to keep it on if you want to get better. Perhaps some physical therapy might be in order as well. Just save all your medical bills.

ShaharThorne -> RE: Weird maso medical question (4/29/2013 3:36:35 PM)

Sounds like you have some injury to the tendons around your elbow. When I hurt my left arm (try reaching for the phone and I fell against the sewing machine, causing some massive bruising, tenderness and the tendons around my shoulder was affected), I had to do PT to get my range of motion back. I am a bit maso as well but I suffer from fibromyalgia too so the level of pain that I endure varies from day to day. I take tramadol and norco as needed for the deep pain. I was dianogized(?) with gout recently so I have to deal with that as well (and arthritis in the knees and hips).

Have the doctor fill out the paperwork with you. Use the pain range to show what causes the discomfort, Giggling does release hormones to combat pain levels.

littlewonder -> RE: Weird maso medical question (4/29/2013 6:28:42 PM)

Does your doctor know about the permanent shoulder injury? If not, you need to tell him. He needs to know so that maybe he can find an alternative for the arm sling or something to help you more.

Missokyst -> RE: Weird maso medical question (4/29/2013 7:36:23 PM)

Hmm... I don't recall whether or not that came up, although I did mention it to the insurance company... I hope that won't bite me in the butt!
I am seeing the doc on Wednesday. I will let him know about the old shoulder injury as well as the fact I could not work a productive day except for that first day after my injury.
