I'm gonna take my laptop to the office and never use it while he's here at the house

Seriously, Lookie, could you construct a better plan to get him just dying to know what's on there?

I second that...if he wasn't determined to find out your "Secrets"... he absolutely will be once you start making it blatantly obvious that you have some.

If your son is such a computer guy...with tech. knowledge.. he should already have his own desktop or laptop or macbook... or tablet.. or whatever...

Just be a Dad (or adult...) and set boundaries [;)]

But...if he finds mine (which I'll hide....naturally...he'll find...he's a kid and...he's curious so...while I'm at work, etc....)....HOW do I make my computer not show him (he's computer smart....he's a young kid....I have to assume)....what I've been doing (including TALKING TO YOU!!!!!!!!).
My preference would be to buy him his own modest computer, and leave yours off limits, locked in your room.

The other thing I do, when someone else absolutely has to touch my computer, is Disk Cleanup, which deletes history, cookies, etc.
Good luck, M

If you could financially swing it, the safest thing would be for you to get him an inexpensive laptop of his own, so you can be the cool dad who wants him to feel totally secure that you won't be invading *his* privacy. [;)]

(Trust me....I can financially swing it :) )

cordeliasub -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/1/2013 4:38:07 AM)

I think his own laptop is a good idea. And then password protect yours. And he's 35....so he can respect privacy. And unless your secrets are that you are a serial killer then some porn or a secret harem probably won't wig him out anyway. If you're a serial killer......can I send you some names? lol

Lucylastic -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/1/2013 5:58:34 AM)

His own computer.

Keep all your secret stuff on a removable hard drive.
He may be your kid, but hes 35 isnt he???hes an adult, will you go searching for things he looks up or discusses?
CCleaner is very good cleaner btw, Ive used it for ten years or more.
you can clean cache, temp files, history, cookies, documents, thumbails, recycle bin, cliipboard, and temp files etc etc etc and that is for most applications that access the internet.

Lookie, if you tell us what the secrets are, we on the forums will be better equipped to assist you.
This is THE best suggestion by far! They say confession is good for the soul.

I also found this helpful:

You can set up your computer to have multiple users. You have a password for when YOU use it, and he signs in as a guest. You should be able to go to your control panel to do that.

This works. Just have a password to log into Windows. We had 4 users on our old desktop. Just don't make him an Administrator, able to change other accounts.

calamitysandra -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/2/2013 4:39:09 AM)

Talk to him. You two are building a relationship, so that would be my advice on most issues.

More than likely he does some things on the computer that he does not want to be public, too.
Sit down together and discuss privacy (not only concerning the computer) rules for both of you.

needlesandpins -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/2/2013 5:30:54 AM)

you're his dad not his best mate. he's a 35yr old grown MAN not a little boy. so two things...a) he's old enough to respect your home and your stuff without snooping. b) he's old enough to already have his own computor of whatever sort. if he doesn't then stop making a problem where there isn't one and buy one for him.

he's 6 years younger than me, but even when younger i would never have snooped through my parents things, or anyone else's for that matter. you're talking about him like he's 10. try thinking of him as the adult man that he is.

theshytype -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/2/2013 7:14:10 PM)

Yeah, I'm 33 and I can guarantee you I will never go snooping around my parents business. Don't wanna know. Don't wanna know. Don't wanna know!
Even so, accidents can happen and it is best to avoid them. Passwords, separate computer, clearing browsing history are all good ideas to avoid coming across information accidentally.

I ain't gonna buy him shit...he's a big boy, over 21....he's just, like a million other kids in this economy, looking for a leg up and, in the process, looking for a way to get to know me.

It works for both of us....win/win.

It's tough out there...more so than at any time in my known knowledge of economies and....I know economies.

His gig here is fixed to last 6 months and that is where it's gonna stop. After that, a tank of gas, a solid handshake and he's gone.

But, I will provide him with a clean place to stay, super fast internet ('cause his gig is an online magazine), a home, some food and....a place to get to know me (and I him).

And thanks to the "rules of the house", he has responsibilities (thank you for those that offered advice on same).

Ain't no coddling gonna happen here but, latitude will be available :)

LafayetteLady -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/3/2013 3:49:15 AM)

Lookie, I think you are off to a great start, especially for someone who suddenly became a parent of an adult child. But I also think you might be over worrying about stuff because of that.

I don't know what is on your computer, but if it is porn....well, he's 35, I'm sure he has seen some by now and wouldn't think much of it. If the porn involves pictures of you that he happened to stumble upon....well, I think he would be more concerned about how he could bleach his eyes of the image. After all, we never want to think about, much less see out parents involved in sexual situations.

Also, if you behave as though you have something to hide, well that peaks curiosity and makes someone want to find out what is hidden. I doubt he would even have any interest in searching through your computer to find out what you've got on there.

So, relax and enjoy getting to know your son and be grateful you don't have to do midnight feedings or change his diaper.

descrite -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/3/2013 4:15:17 AM)

CCleaner is good. No software is flawless.

Rule in IT security: if I can touch your box, I can own it.

Take the machine with you when you leave home. Leave it in your trunk.

Rasciallymisty -> RE: I might have a few secrets.... (5/3/2013 4:29:32 AM)

Lookie I guess I would ask do you trust your brother when it comes to knowing computers?? If so and he has suggest Ccleaner and so did someone else, so I would say go for it. I hope you enjoy the six months with your son and that a bond will be made.

One or two.....

So...those of you in the (computer) know.....

How can I clean my computer so my boy (very astute in computer things) can't see where I've been?

My brother tells me Ccleaner is a good product....any other advice?

Hi Lookie, I read the thread. Ccleaner will do what you need. However, running the registry cleanup utility that Ccleaner has is overkill, given your objective, so it's probably not a good idea. A lot of experts recommend against registry cleaners because they can cause weird issues to arise that are hard to fix. So my advice is to run Ccleaner in a way that it deletes all files, but doesn't touch the registry.

If you want more security after that, you could run a secure shredding program once Ccleaner has done the deletion. That would make it hard for data forensics to reconstruct your files and history. Not likely your relatives will run Encase on your disk though. (Encase is the industry standard law enforcement file retrieval program. You can look it up on Wikipedia if you feel like being paranoid.)

I think you're right but I am EVER so thankful for EVERYONE'S advice....every piece has been useful :)
