Yeah, when I was a younger lad, my old man used to tell us kids (as we were watching the Eyewitness evening news) that that was militaries, all over the world, celebrating his birthday.

That would be the gaelic festival. It is held halfway between the spring equinox and the summer solstice which is April 30 or May 1 most years.

Maypoles are a germanic thing not gaelic.
