Duncanville student's classroom rant goes viral

DUNCANVILLE — A YouTube video of a Duncanville High School student giving his history teacher a lesson has gone viral, and has his district talking.

"If you would just get up and teach us instead of handing 'em a packet yo, there's kids in here that don't learn like that... they need to learn face-to-face," said student Jeff Bliss on the 84-second video clip recorded by a classmate. "You want kids to come to class? You want them to get excited? You gotta come in here, you gotta make 'em excited, to change him and make him better, you gotta touch his freakin' heart. You can't expect a kid to change if all you do is just tell him."

Ok, he does not have to be an alien, but he knows what the hell he is talking about. Critiquing the teaching style of his teacher, I wish more kids would do this.

Evidently, school has changed a hell of a lot since I graduated. Hell, even in math and English classes the teachers worked to get students actively involved in what was going on.

I remember a history class I failed in the 7th grade. My older sister told me the class was a cake was a cake walk because it was just work sheets every day, no lectures, open book tests. I've always done best in classes where the teachers are involved. Even today, the agency for which I work provides ongoing trainings; it used to be most of the trainings were in the classroom. These days, to cut costs, they have contracted with a company called Essential Learning. They provide 100s of online trainings for a nominal fee. The agency has the list of trainings that we must take and then we take whatever courses of interest on our own time. I have to review all of the online repeatedly prior to taking each test. My boss told me that I should just do what he does, skip ahead to the test, fail it and keep taking it until I get a passing grade. His said his passing grades are usually about 80-83%; I get upset if I score less than 85% on a test. We have to score at least an 80% and have unlimited chances to make those scores. My boss cheats.

Will it do any good, though?

I don't know that I would call what your boss is doing "cheating." If it were me, I would likely skip to the test and see what grade I got without going through the hassle of the "class" online. Then again, I was a straight "A" student in college and rarely read the material, so....

As for the OP....Good for him. It is amazing that teachers and administrators have gotten so lazy they have no interest in why students aren't learning. Come in, sit down, be quiet and do the worksheets. If there is a question, the teach will come to your desk and try to "lead" you to the right answer. That isn't teaching.

I totally agree with the kid, and would hope that the principal wants to meet with him to discuss changes that could be made.

I remember one year when I was teaching marine science.
I was told I was going to be evaluated on a certain day and to be ready.
The topic was marine mammals. I called a friend out at the UM marine lab where I had worked and showed up with Whale and dolphin skulls, teeth, baleen, manatee bones, etc.
Lesson came and went. Students were EATING OUT OF MY HANDS. After school, I went to get the results of my evaluation.
Wanna guess what the results were? Let's just say I was displeased.
I hadn't written the course objective on the board or handed out worksheets.

Don't blame the teachers. Blame the ignorant fucking educrats that make the rules.

What a bunch of dumb educrats, as you call them. Have you ever seen the movie "Teachers"?

Ed Asner had a short lived tv series about being a teacher. The show displayed some of the same seniority/tenure vs excellent teaching issues on that show, too.

netflix--the war on children. rough movie to watch (poor production value) but interesting points. The first half isn't as good as the second.

What a fucktard. You made the silly mistake of getting the kids excited about learning and the topic of the day. How dare you inspire kids to learn.

I have known some teachers that are complete asshats and don't give a shit as long as they get paid. The vast majority of teachers I've had and the teachers I know are the complete opposite and care deeply about their students and their students' educations.
