I am new to using melatonin, My aunt uses it and my ex wife used to use it to get to sleep.

I decided that I would try and see if it would help my insomnia. I've started out with a 1 MG subligual, and after I took it I got a feeling of euphoria like every care I had was gone. No I wasn't spaced out or High I know those feelings. This was a very positive feeling like someone cared about me and I didn't have a care.

Is this supposed to make you feel this way? Or am I just thinking that it did

Melatonin is something I use regularly to get to sleep and sleep well, but I have never had anything of the nature that you relate happen while taking it. It has always just made me sleepy. I've taken it for a few years about 3x a week.

I'm not sure why it made you feel euphoric, I've never heard anyone else describe having it do that to them.

My Grandson has used it but has never mention anything like you discribe. It sounds like it a nice feeling to have though. [:)]

I use 1 or 2 mg sublingual from Source Naturals and only feel sleepy, not euphoric. Maybe you're happy to be falling asleep? [;)]

I've never heard of using melatonin sub lingual????

For me, on those days when the brain doesn't want to shut off, it is a melatonin washed down with a cup of chamomile tea.... Shutdown in 30 min and counting.....

Melatonin is a natural secretion of your pineal gland. It is a hormone that attaches to certain base receptors in your brain, and is now thought to be excreted in most people when light is decreased to darkness (a natural sleep-wake cycle between night and day).

From what you describe, it sounds like there may be other issues at hand. The CNS controls sleep more than melatonin, and the effects of the hormone aren't necessarily certain. However, the body is a system, and no two people are alike in how they will react to a given substance. For you, your body may have compensated for a sudden increase in melatonin levels by increasing serotonin or gamma-aminobutyric acid; the latter which gives an almost synthetic euphoria similar to moderate alcohol consumption (not over-consumption). Serotonin can have a similar effect as well.

If you're having troubles sleeping consistently, it would be advisable to see your medical practioner. Sleep issues can be an indicator of numerous issues not specifically isolated to sleep, or they can simply be something that you need help with to figure out a good plan to get back into a natural cycle w/ or w/out the use of sleep aides.

Melatonin is not available in all countries OTC, and this reaction may be one that forewarns you of possible danger. Remember, the brain has many glands that effect the endocrine system, and affecting one can certainly counter-effect another.

Lucky you. Melatonin actually wires me. Sure wish it worked on me for sleep...or euphoria.

As inmatecuffed mentioned above, every body will react differently.

Never heard about that with a 1mg dose. We generally use a .5 mg, the stuff you buy can be 20mg or more, which is crazy (I suspect that is why some people get wired). It could be your chemistry, or it could be psychosomatic.

It did something for me: it made my nightmares even worse.

Of course I have weird drug reactions. Ambien, which is known for giving nightmares, makes mine go away completely.

Edited to add: If insomnia lasts more than two weeks I'd really suggest going to a doctor. It's usually a sign of something else. I've seen doctors, ended up getting surgery and still need to take sleeping pills. Doing so has made my life far better.

each person will react diffrently to each med thats justhow the human body reacts to the medication have you tried benadryl and chamilie tea to get to sleep i have used it in hospitial setting to help patients get to sleep

What most people don't realize is that melatonin isn't a sedative as such. It's useful for helping to regulate sleep cycles; for example, when moving across time zones or if you've had disrupted sleep recently. You can't just use it like you would a sleeping pill. It should be used at least an hour before you're planning to sleep, and at the same time every evening for several days to establish a sleep pattern. Another tip is that if you're having trouble sleeping, try first to establish a regular waking time rather than a regular bed time. Every person is different as far as how much sleep they need, and you won't need the same amount of sleep every night. By keeping the same waking time, your body is better able to regulate when is the right time to go to sleep. It may be earlier or later some nights, but it'll probably be what you need.

I use it, being a night shift guy sometimes it's hard to fall asleep in the morning after work, it helps me
Pass out and get real sleep.

It leaves The Man feeling groggy as hell. But he doesn't take it for days on end to regulate the sleep cycle which he should.
