she didn't say that permed hair can never be lightened more than two shades. She said YOUR hair should not be lightened again.

Yeah everybody else can do it EXCEPT ME. Just my luck.

I HATE my hair. My natural hair is so fine it makes it look extremely thin. When straight, it separates and looks stringy on the bottom. It's so slippery I can't even pull it into a high ponytail without it loosening up and parting in the back making it look like crap. When I was a teenager,, my grandmother told me I needed to keep my hair permed because it was too fine. About a year ago, someone who was trying to french braid my hair complained it was too slippery and advised me to get a perm. Once I did that, at least my styling problems were solved. My hair felt thicker and stayed put with no more parting in the back when pulled up. But perms are so out of style. How can I change the texture of my hair without them? My stupid hair is either too brittle or too slippery. End of rant lol.

Yes, you are quite lucky to have an ethical hairdresser who cared enough to tell you the truth and not just what you wanted to hear.

As for your fine, slippery hair, you could try and find a becoming hairstyle that doesn't require putting it up... or have the sylist walk you through the newer products for adding volume.
Also, many people are using the new dry shampoos to give their hair more grip.

angelikaJ -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 7:29:47 PM)

edit to add:
She says her hair is on the limp side; personally I would probably never do any kind of style that required all those steps, but some people do.

listen to your hairstylist. She knows what she's talking about but hey, if you wanna risk your hair turning orange and/or falling out, then find another. Personally, I've seen this happen to one too many family and friends including my own daughter who had her hair ruined by a stylist who knew it was wrong to be doing what she did to her hair but refused to say anything to my daughter. She ended up paying $300 for a head full of orange hair and a burned scalp. She then had to go to another stylist and pay another $100 to have it corrected. It took her forever to get her natural, healthy hair back.

LafayetteLady -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/10/2013 9:18:18 PM)

People who have thin and/or fine hair usually are using too many products in their hair. Using the products in an attempt to give your hair more volume is counter productive.

It sounds like you have had many perms, and that because of how you feel about your hair, you have probably used too much product, over styled, over blow dried and curled trying to get a look that your hair just isn't destined for.

But now you have the perm, so be happy that someone cared enough not to burn off the remainder of your hair.

Also, while they are always saying that as you get older, you should go light, in my opinion, every woman I have seen that does that looks older the lighter they go.

^Congrats, Oside!

For women with fine and/or thin hair, less is more with the use of hair products. Usually a good deep-conditioning once a week gives my godmother (who has baby fine hair) great volume without giving her a greasy or poofy look.

soul2share -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/16/2013 4:49:38 PM)

For years, literally years, I fought the stick straight fine and smooth texture of my hair, trying to get it to curl, poof, have volume, stay in one style, did the perm thing.....used all sorts of different styling tools and products, at once.....none of which worked for me. It would literally take an HOUR for me to get my hair done in whatever style I was doing at the time. About 5 years ago, I just decided to face the ugly truth, my hair is fine, smooth and will always be straight. It IS flat, has no body and will do what it wants. I now wear a pixie cut, which is actually quite becoming to my face, turns out long hair ages me, and all I do is wash it, put some humectress on it for a leave in, and use Paul Mitchell's fast form on it, and it looks fine. Because it's short, I can actually blow it dry, and it will allow itself to be shaped, and since it's short, actually has a bit of poof (body) to it. If I want to grow it a bit, a bob also works if it's cut right.

My point is, try to just let your hair be what it will be. The only thing I do to mine is color it, perms are too damaging to my hair. Either way, like the others are saying, be glad that your stylist is honest with you about the status of your hair. I've had mine torn up before so badly that the only way to fix it was to chop it off.

I have long hair and a lot of it but it's super baby fine....so I use extensions and it's way better than a perm. Have you checked into them, not permanent ones just the clip in ones? I love them and have used them forever. Just a suggestion. Perms are horrible for your hair.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/16/2013 7:45:36 PM)

A long time ago, so long that mentioning ages would be against the TOS, I met a girl who had dyed her hair blond.

She went swimming at the Y.

She turned out green. Kermit the Frog green.

I never told her, but I thought it was hot.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/16/2013 7:48:31 PM)

My mom has been perming and dying her hair, for ages , and it looks super shitty and awful. It's poofy as he'll and it looks very dry and straw like. And that nice controlled freshly permed look she likes and goes for only looks that way for2-4 days.
She of course thinks her hair is healthy and beautiful. I'm not going to start a fight or be mean telling her otherwise.

Perms cause damage.
The hair does not un-perm but instead has to grow out.... so if you want undamaged hair the permed hair has to be cut off.
Your hair may straighten as it grows, due to the weight of it, but multiple perms on the length cause more damage to the strands

Just because the perm was done months ago, does not mean the effects of it have left your hair.

I used to HATE my hair.
It is fine (but I have a lot of it) and tangled easily and I could not do anything with it.

Aprox 5 years ago I went to a new hairdresser on a whim, and told her I hated my hair.
She washed it and began combing it out and began laughing.
She said I know why you hate your hair: you have curly hair.
I had no idea... and had once even gotten a perm just so I could have waves on short hair.

The hairdresser explained that the issue was the haircut was "all wrong" for my hair and began cutting in the right kind of layers and then dried it with a diffuser and her fingers.
I had a headful of curls when she finished... lovely ringlets.

So my advice is to not take the advice of well-meaning acquaintances, friends and loving relatives.
Find a skilled hairdresser to work with your particular hair-type and find a style that works with your hair and is becoming to you.

ShaharThorne -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/17/2013 6:45:49 PM)

I got fine but a lot of hair. I quit getting perms about 20+ years and color it sometimes. Now I got a bob coming out of a pixie cut (Mom wants me to cut it again) and lots of grey hair. Got a box of auburn color dye in the bathroom...will probably color the grey next week when I got nothing to do.

MistressDarkArt -> RE: question about coloring hair (5/17/2013 7:54:49 PM)

OP, sometimes just coloring your hair (no perm) will change the texture enough to give it some lift and body without burning the hell out of it.

I have super-fine, naturally curly hair that's thinning a bit in front. I use a combo of Satin 4G/Wella 841 (50/50), and a 10% developer. This mix only deposits color which is what I want; there's not enough peroxide/ammonia to lighten. It does a fine job on the grays and is the closest thing I've found to my natural honey-blonde color. I apply it only on the roots using this applicator. Because only the roots are treated, it doesn't damage hair but certainly gives a lot of lift from the hairline. It looks natural (subtly streaked on its own without foil or caps) so people are always surprised to hear I'm a slave to the peroxide bottle and want to know who my colorist is. [8D]
