Really State Department??? I mean the cat is out of the bag!

Cut, Paste, Print, Shoot

Wait until the first printable 3D drone is posted online.

If the United States cannot regulate rifles, they certainly cannot regulate flying remote controlled rifles, and if an M-16 is the 20th century version of a musket then a drone is certainly the21st century version of the weapon.

yep huge internet policing implications. there goes the net!

the 3d modeling printer is way kool though, would give some value to all the plastic being tossed in the trash

Do I take it that no one here sees it as a real threat?

Where do we go from here, though, egern? I mean, I get that anyone being able to "print" a gun can lead to all sorts of unsavory types getting their hands on guns. And, 3-D printers are also raising the specter of potential patent rights infringement, too. Imagine, if you will, you buy a proprietary piece of equipment from a manufacturer. In theory, you could take it apart and "print" every part, on demand for anyone, doing an end-around on the manufacturer.

Where is the line drawn? We have the technology to print shit in 3-D. As fuckin' cool as that is, it definitely does open up doors that most wouldn't have thought possible 10 years ago. Even if you prevent the plans for this plastic gun, who has already developed workable plans, but hasn't posted them?

The only way to prevent this would be to ban 3-D printers.

I thought someone posted on here that the end of humans is near and technological advancements are at the core.

When 3-D printers are outlawed, only outlaws will have 3-D printers.[8D]

3-D printers don't kill people. Guns kill people.
But you will get my 3-D printer from my cold, dead hands.

TricklessMagic -> RE: FEDS PANIC OVER 3D PLASTIC GUN (5/11/2013 6:51:13 AM)

The concept of freedom and liberty is abhorrent to some people unfortunately. Rather than create laws that punish criminals harshly, they'd rather attack the rights of a society as a whole to accomplish "control" rather than liberty. 3D printers for the longest time, for the average person, have been self-build undertakings, only in the last few years have you been able to buy new ones for less than two grand. It bothers the state department for the technology to exist and they have no way to regulate it. With Schumer and the other anti-American icons getting pissy over the technology, Obama and his boys had to do something. So right now Cody Wilson's website defcad.org has been temporarily pulled down http://defcad.org/ for the majority of its files. Granted I made several copies of all the files every week waiting for this to happen, and the files can still be found on the internet at the usual sources. As hard as the government tries to bottle up the genie, it's just not going to happen.

When the government fears liberty, the government should be feared, and sought to be thwarted. If the government can regulate free speech then we are in some serious trouble, and CAD designs and files are free speech.

Legislate as if Star Trek era technology were commonplace. It eventually will be.

"Replicator, I'd like a nuclear bomb, please." -bleep- "Here ya go."

That's what we must anticipate, and grow to be responsible enough to live with.

Any suggestions on how to go about that?

Mine tend to be unpopular.

yeh eliminate greed starting at the TOP.

Lets see the elites give up their power and wealth as a good faith measure to usher in an altruistic non-force society.

Nope.

It has always been legal to build your own firearm for personal use. It has just been rare because most folks do not have metal shops. This just makes creating a firearm for personal use easier.

FatDomDaddy -> RE: FEDS PANIC OVER 3D PLASTIC GUN (5/11/2013 9:51:29 AM)

what she said

Aylee -> RE: FEDS PANIC OVER 3D PLASTIC GUN (5/11/2013 11:27:18 AM)

I have been trying to remember the sci-fi story I read that this whole thing reminded me of. The guy created a tool that was easy for anyone to manufacture yet had tons of uses. There was a congressional hearing about it and the ending was pretty much, "Too bad, the plans are out there." I want to say that it was Heinlein, but I cannot recall. The files were downloaded over 100,000 times and to file sharing services. This is putting guards on the picket lines after the cows have come home. [8|]

I remember when home computers cost that much, and few people had them. The situation has changed since then.

My first thought when I read of the '3D photocopying of guns' in the UK press was, 'Well, that's the great gun control debate over with, then.'

cordeliasub -> RE: FEDS PANIC OVER 3D PLASTIC GUN (5/11/2013 1:31:05 PM)

I think we should make a list of everything on the planet that could be potentially dangerous and make sure no one can have one. I'll be sitting over here naked with my baby chick and single green bean just in case. [8|]

I hope it's an organic, free range green bean.

Ugh, I hate to see (and hearing) this statement. It always seems to be the shield that every anti gun person hides behind.

Guns DO NOT kill people. A gun is a tool, an inanimate object. It is no different than a bow, a knife, a sword, a spear, etc.

The cold hard truth is that PEOPLE kill PEOPLE. Yes guns are (like many other devices) designed to kill, but to blame the gun for doing what it was designed to do would be tantamount to blaming a car for killing someone when the driver was drunk. It's lunacy, would you ban cars?

Ok, sure it looks bad for guns after the events of Sandy Hook, and all the school shootings that came before but what would really happen if guns were banned. Lets take a look at countries where they are to see our future here:
June 8, 2001, at Ikeda Elementary School - 37-year-old former janitor Mamoru Takuma stabbed 21 children (eight died from their wounds) with a kitchen knife.
Apr 9th 2013, at Cy-Fair campus near Houston - Dylan Quick, 20, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault in the attack against 14 people at the community college (with a small razor like knife).
April 27, 2012 - A man stabbed two people at the Smith’s Marketplace grocery store in downtown Salt Lake City before being subdued by a bystander, but wait police say the bystander had a concealed carry permit and witnessed the attack, stepping in to keep it from escalating.

Hmm, so is it possible that guns can save lives as well as take them?

I am quite certain that my post will bring an onslaught of opinions, some maybe more rational that others, but these are just the facts of the world we live in. To deny them is, as I said above, just lunacy.

-------------------

Back on topic, HURAY for 3-d printed gun! I don't need one, but the concept of it is quite cool. I would however love to my hands on one of those 3d printers.
