Gates, a Republican who was appointed by then-President George W. Bush in 2006 and agreed to stay through more than two years of President Obama's first term, repeatedly declined to criticize the policymakers who devised a response to the September 2012 attack on a U.S. diplomatic facility in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens.

"Frankly, had I been in the job at the time, I think my decisions would have been just as theirs were," said Gates, now the chancellor of the College of William and Mary.

"We don't have a ready force standing by in the Middle East, and so getting somebody there in a timely way would have been very difficult, if not impossible." he explained.

Suggestions that we could have flown a fighter jet over the attackers to "scare them with the noise or something," Gates said, ignored the "number of surface to air missiles that have disappeared from [former Libyan leader] Qaddafi's arsenals."

"I would not have approved sending an aircraft, a single aircraft, over Benghazi under those circumstances," he said."

Sounds like a lamo excuse for a country that has a military budget like it does..and with a DHS, CIA, FBI, ad infinitum government agencies...it's piss poor performance. 16 trilliion dollars of debt and still you have attacks, not only in the middle east but here at home too...nah

Real0ne -> RE: Gates:Benghazi critics have "cartoonish" view of military capability (5/12/2013 12:29:04 PM)

they knew that going in however.
dubya said they were launching a 100 year war against phantom of terror.

in other words terror is a new definition that expands jurisdiction of previous actionable offenses that already have crimnal penalties.

in other words it only serves to expand power and control and provide more pseudo jurisdiction to infringe on, well, everything.

CIA, FBI, DHS.... still not gonna be able to analyze the situation, put together an attack plan, get some planes and a bunch of soldiers ready to go, fly in from another continent, land at the airport, get some vehicles, drive to the consulate, and fight a battle in a few hours.

Where in the world did you ever get the notion that throwing more money at a problem makes anything attack proof?
