The shooting

"One of his books, Resistance to Tyranny, espouses a lone-wolf “underground movement of secret freedom fighters, each acting individually and independently to ignore, evade, resist and thwart the increasingly heavy hand of government power.”

Wow........that sound very very familiar.....

Where do we hear stuff like that?

Hominem unius libri timeo

~Aquinas

And Charles Manson had a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land, yet I do not think that he read all that well.

I understand that a person's library can say a lot about them. However, that usually only works when they have made notes in the margins and such.

As far as the description goes:

quote:

“underground movement of secret freedom fighters, each acting individually and independently to ignore, evade, resist and thwart the increasingly heavy hand of government power.”

I have many sci-fi novels and series with that plot. Also the Firefly DVDs and Serenity.

I don't think it works at all unless they have actualy read the books.

It's the folks without libraries you have to worry about. They're the ones who understand the concept of not getting caught.

Lucylastic -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/12/2013 7:50:45 PM)

LMAO the twunt who shot gabby giffords and killed all those people in arizona was a "lefty" because he had a copy of mein kampf according to many on here, I seem to remember...

tweakabelle -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/12/2013 9:43:51 PM)

The literature a lunatic like this one might have in their library only matters when porn or the Koran is found. Then we hear the calls for banning porn and/or another bout of rampant Islamophobia.

Most of these characters usually have a copy of the Bible, with its multiple lurid accounts of mass slaughters and random murders but for some reason that doesn't seem to count for much .......

DarkSteven -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/12/2013 10:01:33 PM)

Pffft.

There are always people who make the claim that the shooters are right wing or left wing.

Neither wing advocates killing people. Neither one is applicable.

They are crazy people. It doesn't matter what they read or how they vote. They do not represent the current parties.

tj444 -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/12/2013 10:15:22 PM)

sounds like it was simply suicide by cop.. he shouted for them to kill him, if he was "right wing" wouldnt he be shouting to see Obamas birth certificate or demand taxes be cut or some such thing instead?

Edwynn -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/13/2013 4:08:12 AM)

Only a sicko politico would even attempt to use such an event as in some way connected to any 'conservative' agenda, or leftist agenda, or whatever else.

Who knows what the OP is on about in this one.

I'm done forever with politico fuckwits ever since an army of blame-the victim 'liberals' and blame-the-victim 'conservatives' came out of the woodwork in the financial fiasco and joined hands in stomping on the face of the numerous millions who suffered from the complete recklessness of their beloved ideological heroes that they elected.

Parroting of the media's incessant bleating of "used their house as an ATM" would be the dead giveaway there.

If I sympathize with Israel, I'm an 'advocate' of state aggression, and 'legitimize' Israeli atrocities. If I sympathize with Palestine, I'm a terrorist sympathizer.

(Fact is, I have zero sympathy for either side, sorry).

If I state a preference for ending the hostilities and finding a solution, then I am going against the US state department, and under recent 'homeland insecurity' laws, probably a domestic terrorist, or sympathizer of same.

Whatever Manson had a copy of, he had long hair and was a 'hippie,' therefore 'leftist,' and Jim Jones had short hair and a wacked understanding of religion, and was therefore a 'rightie,' according to the OP.

Which subject was common among the 'left' and other disenchanted groups in times past, late '60s, significantly. But certainly many different times, among many different groups prior to any of that.

There were some in the '60s and prior that understood that this is a rogue government because of corporate infiltration. But the media has since succeeded in propagating the myth that there is some distinction and difference between the two elements, now that corporate infiltration has succeeded more famously in the last 30 years than anyone could have imagined (other than in sci-fi books) in any time past.

The soap opera of political ideology fits the bill, there.

Kardashian/Idol democracy. An informed republic.

Really? Mal's posse aren't any closer to thwarting the Union at the end of Serenity than they are in the two pilots for Firefly.
Now if you were talking Jack Vance (or Andrew MacDonald, come to that), that argument might hold some water.

jlf1961 -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/13/2013 5:16:58 AM)

Gee I have a lot of old Military manuals dealing with various subjects.

I also have Plato's Republic, Catcher in the Rye, Anarchist's cookbook (I consider it a suicide manual) and a few others.

People without libraries either physical or "e" would be most properly catagorized as illiterate.

Edwynn -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/13/2013 8:53:36 AM)

Do you have a 'link' for that assertion?

I'm just kidding.

Too many people so disdain libraries, or especially whatever anyone has learned from that.

"Show me a link, I'm too lazy to look it up for myself!" seems to be the mantra du jour.

Forget going to an actual library.

TricklessMagic -> RE: The latest rightwing domestic terrorist...... (5/13/2013 9:46:43 AM)

Not getting caught is the point. A sanitized appearance devoid of books about fighting for liberty is an important point. Too many people load up on these books it just look silly. Most of them are repetitive not written by experts.

Some people can't feel good about themselves unless they are putting down the other side. They see every situation as a left vs right fight and live for moments they can point out someone on the other side doing something bad. Some even take it to the extreme that they feel everyone on the other side is evil. I feel sorry for the little bigots but they did it to themselves. It must suck to live with all that hate bubbling out all the time.

This post misses my point completely.
This post seems to be wrappped up in getting away with something against the "ebil" govt.
My post has to deal with what a person reads gives us some insight as to that persons personality.
Now for those who think that they are some sort of "patriot rambo" my guess is that their "library" (the literature they read)would reflect their "patriot rambo" personality...the post in question is more directed in getting away with something than it is in discussing the value of a library in discerning someones personality.

Again...those are both extremists. Small numbers, but very vocal.
