Love John Hurt, but ...not sure about this ....

ResidentSadist -> RE: John Hurt as the new Doctor? (5/18/2013 3:55:00 PM)

Doctor Who (TV series) will have a 50th Anniversary Special on 23 of Nov 2013.
Cast will include John Hurt but he is not (yet) credited as playing the Doctor on IMDB.com. Both David Tennant (10th Doctor) and Matt Smith (11th Doctor) will be in the show as will Billie Piper (Rose Tyler).

The rumors are that John Hurt will take Christopher Eccleston's role as the 9th Doctor.

John Hurt's bio offers no further illumination.

As just a character on the 50th anniversary I'm fine with but if he was to play a new Doctor, I would have to stop watching Dr. Who. He's just not right for the part.

Lucylastic -> RE: John Hurt as the new Doctor? (5/18/2013 8:39:50 PM)

aaaaaah so the plot thickens.....nice to see him tonite but...doubt he will be in many more episodes as a reg....but Ive been wrong before:)

Apparently John Hurt will play the real Ninth Doctor but not the Christopher Eccleston 9th version of the Doctor. So it looks like they are rewriting (reboot) history to me.

Sources say:

Christopher Eccleston has always been thought of as the Ninth Doctor but now that John has been revealed as the Ninth Doctor, it shuffles Eccleston's Doctor to be the 10th Time Lord, Tennant the 11th and Smith the 12th.

''It also means the Doctor's time is running out as he can only regenerate 12 times.''

John revealed earlier this week he will play ''part of the Doctor'' in a ''kind of trinity'' with Matt Smith and David Tennant, but the pair's Doctors will initially refuse to accept John's character is one of them until it becomes apparent thanks to their sonic screwdrivers.

Well, during the ep he said that when he was John Hurt he was not known as the Doctor.

Theories are it was before he ran away (i.e. Pre William Hartnell), during the Time War he dropped his title to do the horrendous things he did, or that it is a future version of himself.
In a Colin Baker story he met a future version of himself called The Valeyard who was desperately clinging onto life and was doing anything to extend it.

I don't think it'll be the Valeyard personally, though I'm not sure about the other two options as they'd both fit quite well into the story.

As a Doctor I've not seen John Hurt in enough to comment how good he'd be as a Doctor (or indeed a darker version), I've heard rumours about the next regeneration as well and it wasn't John Hurt...

Not so - River Song already gave the Doctor a pile of extra regenerations.

ResidentSadist -> RE: John Hurt as the new Doctor? (5/19/2013 2:03:50 AM)

Well, when River Song saves the Doctor, curing him of the Poison she gave him, she used her remaining regenerations. The general fan impressions are that she has 1 life left (which is correct) and gave the Doctor 10 or 11 more regenerations (which may not be correct).

The story synopsis for that episode Lets Kill Hitler does not say the regenerations passed onto him, only that she spent them to revive him:

. . . On returning to the café, the trio finds the Doctor near death; he asks River to find "River Song" and give her a message, then whispers something in her ear before he passes away. River, who at this point still only knows herself as Melody Pond, asks Amy who River Song is; Amy uses the Teselecta to show River her form stored in the robot's database of who she is to become. With this, River sacrifices her remaining regenerations to bring the Doctor back to life, and passes out. The Doctor, Amy, and Rory take her to a hospital in the far future, leaving the TARDIS-shaped diary as a gift by her bedside, and depart. Later, River is shown becoming an archaeologist so she can find the Doctor herself. Aboard the TARDIS, the Doctor has discovered the date of his death from the records aboard the Teselecta, but does not reveal this knowledge to Amy or Rory.

Well, I was just watching the latest Doctor Who episode The Name of the Doctor which is season finale and I was thinking to myself, this is certainly the best Matt Smith episode I have ever seen. Then at the end, guess who makes a 2 minute cameo as the Doctor . . . yup, John Hurt. Then it says "continued nov 23rd"

[SPOILER ALERT]
Here is link to synopsis (link). It was one of the best Doctor Who shows I have seen in a long while. I mean we have always wanted to know who Doctor Who really was . . . well, we find out. John Hurt being the incarnation of the Doctor that breaks the code of doctoring, his greatest secret. The man who says he "had to do what he did."

Ratings are giving this season finale a 9+. Watch for it, it was great.

Ollivander from Harry Potter...with you now. Isn't he a bit old to be the Doctor? The only ones I have ever really watched were with Colin Baker

Lucylastic -> RE: John Hurt as the new Doctor? (5/19/2013 3:47:56 AM)

Hes 73 now...the first three docs were older chaps, but he certainly has the acting ability for the quirkiness factor.
RS I thoroughly enjoyed last nights episode too.
Roll on november....not that im wishing my life away or anything.

ResidentSadist -> RE: John Hurt as the new Doctor? (5/19/2013 7:06:20 AM)

"Roll on november . . . "

I feel ya', really I do. I never liked Matt Smith as much as Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant. But this episode was just awesome and it was everything you would ever expect and then some. The script came off real smooth. The whole show was real smooth. Truly one of the best I have seen in a long time. I am definitely going to watch that episode again.

I am left on the edge of my seat. It wasn't exactly a cliff hanger, leaving us in the middle of something. It closed the issues within the show but it opened a whole new world with his real identity. While bouncing through his newly opened time line at the end when he explains about how choosing a name is like a promise and they introduce John Hurt as "the one that broke the promise" . . . Fuck me sideways, I am totally HOOKED!!! I look forward to seeing Tennant, Smith and Hurt all as Doctors in the same show . . . I wish it was November too!!!

[SPOILER ALERT]
The Name of The Doctor - Doctor Who - Final Scene where they introduce John Hurt.

I love the idea of an older gentleman playing the role. The Doctors have been getting progressively younger/hotter since the new series began. It was reaching a point where he was becoming nerdy eye candy for those attracted to men while his companion played nerdy eye candy for those attracted to women. It was getting too easy to forget that the Doctor is a centuries old alien, not a hot geek boy.

I cant disagree with you..I grew up watching the doctor, and having a grandad love thing for jon pertwee, But the nerdy guy candy definitely got better with Chris and David especially(triple yum). I stopped watching with peter davidson...I was too busy being a teenager, until 2005. Hurt is not my kind of eye candy, never was, but as an actor, he is good:)

RS....I cant disagree with you on any of it, and Iwill be re watching the whole series again :)
