It's hit $600 million and still going up; got a ticket? What would you do if you won?

I don't know exactly how to answer this.

As someone who doesn't gamble and someone who certainly doesn't participate in the "poor tax" that the government calls a "lottery". I'm in a quandry:

Last week, at work, some douche canoe refused to pay for $74 worth of tickets that he claimed I made the mistake on so, I am the proud owner of 74 bi-weekly draws.

(As an aside, it's pretty funny that in order to avoid being accused of one thing I find morally wrong [stealing/coming up short], I had to engage in another thing that falls into the same category).

Anyway, I'll be "playing" for the next 36 weeks, whether I want to or not but, if I do hit, I am soooo going to make sure the douchebag that refused to pay for those tickets knows what happened and I will thank him, profusely by buying him a piece of Bazooka© bubble gum.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

No, no ticket. I stick with Megabucks. I don't know why.

The cash payment on the Powerball is something like $329 million. If I did win, I'd give $300 million away. At least. I think to keep that much money would be sinful. I don't really know what the magic number is that would make keeping the money sinful versus not sinful. I hope it to be a problem I'll have to figure out one day, though. :)

Oh yes. Went in and bought tickets with my oldest son. He's usually the lucky one so maybe he will be this time too.

What would I do with it? Make sure money is invested so my kids won't have to worry about anything. A friend of mine's son-in-law died yesterday from a motorcycle accident he had Thursday evening. He was a cop on the Sheriff's department. He was trying to raise money for some equipment his motor pool needed on the Sheriff's department. I would make sure they got everything they needed and then some. I would also make sure his young widow was taken care of. I know what's it's like to lose your husband at a young age. A couple of other charities I would give to. And I would buy a house on the beach.

And I would share with Level ...

Here's to hoping that sometime in the next 36 weeks you get to post one of those ironic stories.

While I know that I have a better chance of getting hit by a meteorite, I still had to buy one. On the incredibly unlikely chance I do hit it, after I take care of the necessaries, I will do stupid things. And get away with them, too. I'll leave it at that.

I find the best advertising for lottery tickets is a really shitty day at work, and I'll pick up a dollar's worth of dreams when I'm stopping for milk at the Qwik E Mart every so often. It comes out of the entertainment budget.

I'll pretty much always drop a buck, or two for Powerball now that we have it in CA, when the jackpot climbs into the hundreds of millions. As God said to the blonde, meet me halfway - buy a ticket.

Some years ago, the wife and I came up with a "plan," should we ever hit one of the massive jackpots. We keep half to use as we will, and the other half gets divided evenly among family and beloved friends.

I did hear a report that if nobody wins this draw, they'll be estimating the jackpot on the next drawing at a billion.

I just re-read this (and thank you, Caneman) and I didn't realize there was a "what would you do with it?"

Well, this gets into some detailed shit.

I would buy four really nice houses; not "mansions" but they'd be some really nice houses, complete with a boatload of closets bigger than some peoples' master bedrooms.

One would be in Nassau county, one in Colorado, one in France and one in Sicily.

All would have basements or "out" buildings with fully appointed recording studios (control room, mixing equipment, guitars, basses, drums, keyboards, and amplifiers) and a luthier shop.

I figure that would take care of about 10 million dollars.

I would buy a proper headstone for my grandparents' graves. That would probably only be a small (once I hit the lottery) $50,000 or so.

I'd put about 10 million in the bank (those houses will have taxes, etc.) and live off the interest.

With the rest, I would endow two foundations; one for Marines that wish to further their education (up to and including doctorates). That would be called Jaime's Hope. The second would be for the research, treatment, and possible cure of ODD.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Master bought one just for the fun of it. We don't really spend our money on something with such high odds of losing.

Someone at work was baffled and said she couldn't understand what anyone would do with so much money. I looked at her and gave her a zillion things I would do with it, like quit my job, buy a mansion, hire a maid, butler, chef and fitness instructor.I would travel all over the world, buy a place near the ocean where we would probably spend the majority of our time, make sure both my daughter and my mom were secure and happy, leave an inheritance for my daughter, invest a lot of the money, give money to those who I feel truly deserve it based on my terms, make sure Master has anything and everything that he wants as well and the list could go on and on.

If I win I plan to build a stone for stone replica of Edinborough castle, Mounting mini guns in the towers to ward off zombies, and have a house hold staff made up of women who are all natural, no plastic, to wait on me hand and foot, as well as wash the cars I plan to buy.

As far as sharing with level, I dont know him personally, and my family comes first.

*will use my winnings to build a catapult and lob zombies at jeff, for not sharing*

Thanks all for the responses, I'm always interested in how people would use that kind of wealth.

Actually if I won, I would buy a piece of property near here, fix this place up and rent it out, set up college funds for all the grandkids, set up education funds for my two nieces, invest some and put the rest in a living trust to supplement my monthly income.

The property I want to buy is one of the few large acreage areas for sale that is not broken up by county roads. There are spring fed creeks on the property, and five good water wells, so horses for me and the grand kids, game fields planted to help with keeping deer population healthy and no, I will not be allowing non family members to hunt on the property, I will be allowing the Fish and Wildlife department to trap and move deer to areas where they want to bring in new blood to the area.

Legacy first.

I'd create a trust so that 5 generations of my family could have medical insurance and private education. (If none of my descendants can make something of themselves in 5 generations, then I think that would be Darwinism at work, and I accept that result.)

I'd hire a lawyer whose sole work would be to advise me. I'd hire a great CPA.

I'd give a million to each of my four childhood friends.

I'd make my 83 yr. old Mom's life look more like what she wants it to be.

I'd buy a black Spider, for me. It's so much like Batman's car! :)

I'd pay for school so I could earn my Doctorate.

For charity, I'd give to the Enough Project, which fights genocide. Hope for Congo, City of Joy... charities deal with the women who've been mutilated as a tool of genocide. I'd get very political in the U.S. to get equal rights for women passed into law.

Then, I'd travel the world with friends and family.

I'd manage fending off the gigolos (unless I don't want to). LOL

I might do a few MINOR vanity surgeries.

I'd start a scholarship fund in my parents' names at a private high school.

All of this would happen after I faint!

Buy new cars, a Kubota tractor with bucket. Pay other people to cut down a lot of trees. Put up a barn and a riding arena and buy a new horse for my daughter, one that can do pleasure driving among its other abilities. Then I'd find someone to teach me how to do that. Which leads into a truck and a trailer with living quarters.

Take all of the kids and grandkids on a cruise.

Now here's the thing, Level. My wallet, with the ticket in it, is sitting just out of reach, on top of the dresser. I'm not going to get up and look. If the magic ticket was sold here in my little town, I'm sure it will be in the headlines with my morning coffee. Given that it almost certainly wasn't, I can still enjoy the distant dream tonight, and then sip on a smuggled bottle of water at the movies tomorrow night, instead of a Coke, feeling like I got a little value for my money.

I personally know someone that won this way. The regular lottery player chewed him up one side and down the other for selling him the wrong (winning) numbers. He was very glad he had to eat the "mistake".
