outlier -> Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/19/2013 6:06:31 PM)

I ran across this on CBS:

handbags-may-have-more-bacteria-than-a-toilet-seat/

Before I posted it here I checked it out and it turns out to
be a story that first hit snopes in 2006.  They rate it as TRUE

I posted here because I doubt most people think about this and
both sources include some easy sensible precautions that can be taken.

Not surprised at all. I don't know about other women but my purse is the hold-all bag. I throw everything in it if I think I need it. It gets thrown down on the floor on the train and bus. It goes into bathrooms with me, it goes everywhere with me and holds pretty much everything and anything.

MissToYouRedux -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/19/2013 7:02:26 PM)

Easy! My purse, my bacteria. Keep your hands to yourself! [;)]

LafayetteLady -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/19/2013 9:02:39 PM)

And yet, the article doesn't seem to include any incidences of women becoming deathly ill from the bacteria and germs in their purses. So, really, what's the big deal?

Bacteria, as such, aren't necessarily horrible anyway.

Scientific proof that girls do carry cooties!

tj444 -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/19/2013 9:54:21 PM)

mine isnt! mine is nice and clean.. [:)] course that was cuz I got caught in the last torrential rainstorm and I had to walk several blocks and got soaked from head to toe.. I "squished" when i walked.. I had to separate & spread out my soggy dollar bills on the bed to dry.. anything paper was soaked and had to throw in the garbage.. good think I had my coupons in a zip lock bag, they were the only thing that didnt get destroyed.. so my bag has been "washed" and its not bacteria ridden.. [;)] I hold or hang my bag (when I do carry it) and dont ever put it on the floor anywhere, especially the public washrooms.. [sm=eeew.gif] I usually only carry it when i go shopping to hold what I buy.. its basically empty otherwise..

My purse is more famous than I am. It's the foot portion of a stiletto boot with chains for strings. It was most recently cleaned by a rather nice (non kinky) fellow who was selling leather care products.

AthenaSurrenders -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 12:31:34 AM)

My purse is currently a baby-changing bag. Considering the quantity of stray raisins, discarded socks, slobbered-on matchbox cars and biscuit crumbs, I have no doubt I have a little germ factory going on.

My toilet seats on the other hand, are spotless.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 1:07:20 AM)

So you should eat snacks off the toilet seat and not from your purse. Well, you have a small child, so that sounds about right. Of course, at some point your little bundle of joy will toss something in the toilet and try to flush it causing all kinds of problems, so it all evens out, lol.

DesFIP -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 2:03:48 PM)

I don't know about the rest of you, but I ordinarily don't use my purse as a plate.

Rawni -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 2:17:35 PM)

This gives new meaning... at least to me, to old ladies hitting you with their purse. No! Don't use the cane... poison him with the purse.

This also means... we are going to want more purses. Unless we're old of course.

sexyred1 -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 2:20:48 PM)

I only have designer bags, so no bacteria would even DARE come aboard! [;)]

FR From the article "Very often when we hit the restroom, there is no hook in sight to hang it, so we take our bags and we drop them on the restroom floor."

And just what the fuck is that about, anyway? I can't be the only woman who goes into a stall and sees the holes on the door from where the hooks used to be. WTF?

I had heard once that hooks were removed because thieves were reaching over the door and grabbing purses. A. Put the hooks on the side and B. I'll take my chances so I don't have to hold my purse in my lap while I pee. It's hard enough trying to hover and lean without having to distribute the weight of my purse evenly across my thighs. Jeez.

playfulotter -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 3:26:48 PM)

There are some newer or classier places that have the hooks on the side or lower down on the door but a lot of times there just isn't a hook at all....I rotate between three purses all by the same manufacturer and they all look pretty brand new...I change every year or so..I don't even look at new purses as I am more into purses than shoes (shoes really not at all) and if I see them I might want to buy them!

littlewonder -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/20/2013 5:40:38 PM)

My purse is actually a leather bookbag. Since I commute to work everyday by bus and train and I don't drive so I walk pretty much everywhere, my bag is always packed with stuff. I use it for groceries. It carries my books. Currently a bag of cough drops spilled out and they sit at the bottom of my bag and I've just been too lazy to clean them up yet. Stuff has spilled inside it, it's been dropped on every kind of surface imaginable, I throw garbage in it when I'm in a hurry to get to work and there's no trash cans around or the closest one is two blocks down the road that would make me late for work if had to walk down that way (It's DC. Ever try to fight morning crowds straight off the train???).

Yeah, my bag takes a likkin and still well....tickin. And I haven't fallen deathly ill yet.

I put my purse on floors, too, although the Mister got me one of those "bar hooks" so when we sit up at a bar I can hang it.

Knowing this, I don't put my purse on the kitchen counter or table. If it makes its way up there, I wipe the surface down before using it.

I wash my hands a lot so I'm not all that worried about touching it.

tj444 -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/21/2013 6:17:31 AM)

FR-

lets face it.. all that bacteria builds up our immunity.. [;)] right??? right???? [:-]

and like NV, I was my hands a lot..

theshytype -> RE: Purses...More Bacteria Than Toliet Seats (5/21/2013 7:18:05 AM)

No surprise. Cell phones are really bad, too. I haven't fallen deathly ill from either of them.
If I absolutely HAVE to use a public restroom, I keep my purse around my shoulder. Me and any of my personal belongings touch as little as possible.
