Is anyone else watching parts of the horror happening in OK, with towns leveled, and children stuck in flattened schools?
So sad!

A devastating, mile-wide tornado touched down near Oklahoma City on Monday, decimating homes, businesses and schools in the suburb of Moore.
Three people were killed at a 7-Eleven in the path of the storm, including a man, woman and baby who took cover in a freezer but didn't survive, CBS' KWTV reported. Emergency officials urged people to remain off the roads so rescue workers and first responders could reach people potentially trapped in rubble.
Two elementary schools in Moore—Plaza Towers Elementary and Briarwood Elementary—were leveled by the tornado. It was unclear how many children were in the schools at the time the twister hit.
"This is war-zone terrible," Jon Welsh, a helicopter pilot for KFOR-TV who lives in Moore, said while surveying the damage from the air. "This school is completely gone."

The funnel cloud could be seen for miles, creating a debris field several miles wide. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, Okla., the tornado was on the ground for approximately 40 minutes, and a tornado warning was in effect for 16 minutes before twister developed.

Watching those children brings it all home. Can you imagine? I think my house is crushed... and here is why... if my parents are alive.

Heartbreaking.

It's amazing that none of the children were killed and all but four have been reunited with someone.

Rawni -> RE: Disaster in OKlahoma (5/20/2013 4:36:44 PM)

Apparently, first reports are wrong. They are reporting now that two dozen children are either dead or feared dead at one of the schools.

Thank you for the link so we can get direct tweets and reports!

I went to grad school in that area. I actually have friends that have been affected by that tornado. It's been incredibly scary for everyone involved.

DomKen -> RE: Disaster in OKlahoma (5/20/2013 7:05:10 PM)

The devastation is almost beyond comprehension. I'm truly stunned by what I've seen.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Disaster in OKlahoma (5/20/2013 9:02:07 PM)

I experienced a tornado when I was at Ft. Sill. Didn't do much to our WWII barracks, but pummeled the newer 'safer' barrack a few battalions away. My heart goes out. They are scary things, especially at night when you can't see them coming. Maybe it's better if you can't, though.

By Erin McClam, Staff Writer, NBC News
An enormous tornado roared through the Oklahoma City suburbs, killing at least 51 people, including 20 children Monday. The twister pulverized entire city blocks, left behind miles of mangled cars and splintered wood, and destroyed an elementary school where seven children were found dead.
Crews frantically searched the wreckage and were only beginning to get a sense of the destruction when night fell hours later. Officials warned the death toll could climb. At one hospital, 85 patients, including 65 children, were being treated for minor to critical injuries.
“The whole city looks like a debris field,” said Mayor Glenn Lewis of the city of Moore, which appeared to be the hardest hit.

At least seven of the dead children were killed at Plaza Towers Elementary School, where the tornado tore the roof off the school about 3 p.m. A teacher told NBC affiliate KFOR that she draped herself on top of six children in a bathroom to shelter them. Officials said the dead children drowned in a pool of water at the decimated school.
It was not clear how many children still were missing. Students in fourth, fifth and sixth grade were evacuated to a church, but students in lower grades had sheltered in place, KFOR reported. More than two hours after the tornado struck, several children were pulled out alive.

First responders began the grim task of digging people -- including children at two elementary schools -- out of piles of rubble this evening after a devastating monster tornado roared through the Oklahoma city metropolitan area, leaving at least 51 people dead.
Among the dead were children from one of the devastated elementary schools in Moore, Okla., local officials said.
Desperate parents stood around what was left of the devastated Plaza Towers Elementary School, many of them sobbing, as rescuers worked to to help pull out school children and faculty.
"I know there's a number of dead children from that school," Oklahoma City Police spokesman Sgt. Gary Knight said. "I know the number is around seven

Are your parents in OK, and possibly in the middle of this? I pray they are safe/alive.

You are welcome. I very been in shock almost, looking at this, feeling like "Is this in The United States? What is the world coming to? What is happening with these people, and I hear of very few shelters, and no underground in homes there. I hope Help comes immediately, to save everyone who has to be under the rubble that is this

I haven't heard too much about it but have seen one picture which says enough. The photo is an aerial shot that is obvious to have been a sub division. All you can make out are the perfectly-lined streets and driveways. No houses.
Those poor kids. I know they had to have been scared. I'm sure the parents were equally scared.

"We have got good news. The number right now is 24," said Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer at the Oklahoma City Medical Examiner's Office. The prior figure of 51 dead may have included some double-reported casualties, Elliott said.

"There was a lot of chaos," Elliott said.

She cautioned that additional bodies could yet be recovered from the rubble.

Oh that would certainly be positive news, if more families are connected to their families safe, and sound.

My Family grew up not far from Oklahoma city. AFAIK all homes and farms of the period (Depression) had tornado shelters, Grandmother's doubled as canned food storage. I see it as sign of the dumbing down of America that the practice seems largely abandoned. More precisely, the environmental arrogance and sense of entitlement shown other ways by the 'climate deniers' and the general disrespect for 'tree huggers'. We live embedded in a natural system of both support for life and catastrophic changes dangerous to life. Thinking urban development and capital intensive economic systems change that has both short term and long term 'unintended consequences'.
One early report is the dead children drowned sheltering in below ground tunnels. Heavy rain Normally accompanies tornadoes and the Supercells that spawn them. Living in Tornado Alley has real dangers, hopefully more people and responsible authorities will think the situation through more thoroughly now. Maybe not, Moore, OK was the site of one of the most deadly of previous tornados?

This is heartbreaking. I can't comprehend the horror for those parents waiting to see if their children will emerge from the rubble alive.

If I may, I'd like to offer one tiny moment of hope that might touch any animal lovers; http://www.signal1.co.uk/news/videos/tornado-survivor-finds-dog-during-tv-interview/

Over here they'll bring a special documentation about it in 2 minutes.

Very sad disaster indeed.

Personally?  A tragedy.   Publically, not one fuckin dime from the federal government.

Later today federal FEMA action and money should be in the news? And there are larger supercells expected through the week?

That made me cry....I am so happy she found her furbaby.

Moonlightmaddnes -> RE: Disaster in OKlahoma (5/21/2013 12:53:32 PM)

I have heard several times on the news that the children that died drowned in the basement. So heartbreaking. After hearing of babies being torn from their mothers arms I had my 2 month old strapped to me in a baby sling and cinched as tight as I safely could with her every time the tornado sirens went off. If a she went by god I was going with her.

I hate to say this, but I am sure someone is going to figure out a way to blame Obama.

From what I read, this was a storm that seemed to be the perfect mix for this type of storm.

I am hoping that there are not too many dead, but looking at the damage, I fear the worst.

Luck may have been on their side. The area hit is mostly a bedroom community and the tornado hit right in the middle of the work day so most people simply weren't home. If this had happened in the evening...

theshytype -> RE: Disaster in OKlahoma (5/31/2013 7:06:41 PM)

It happened again! Same area. Those poor people of OK!
My hearts go out to them.

I couldn't imagine being in this situation:
