DaddySatyr -> The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/20/2013 10:29:15 PM)

I almost never watch TV but I'm bored and just waiting on leaving for work.

Anyway, I wasn't exactly paying attention but I caught a commercial for a new movie entitled: "The Purge". Apparently, there's a society where they get a "free pass" for breaking ANY law for 12 hours, once per year (I think. I might be lost here).

Even if I have the premise wrong, let's go with that because it got me thinking: If there was a "freebie" given to you, is there any crime that you would commit?

I've been thinking about it and I'm not sure there is (other than the little things we violate, every day speed limits, maybe littering?) for me but, I have to admit that my mind flashed on "bank robbery" or "bank hacking" with the intent of making off with their money but the thoughts were fleeting.

What say you? If the powers-that-be said you'd never be held accountable and you had 12 hours to just run amock. Would you do it? What crime(s) would you commit?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Peace and comfort,

Michael

Maybe bank robbery or an armored car heist if we are talking hypothetically. Nothing that would hurt or kill anyone though.

LadyPact -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 12:39:27 AM)

I'd want to whip one rock at that idiot who runs Westboro Baptist Church, hopefully hitting him in the head.

Of course, I'd have to get there at the very beginning of that twelve hour period because I have no doubt that a single rock would be the least of his worries.

MrRodgers -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 2:12:52 AM)

All 12 hours removing 'inventory' from the vaults of either Bank of America or Wells Fargo, or both. Now 'Govt. Sachs' would do just fine too.

And oh, pay only a 15% 'capital gains' tax on it too.

I happen to believe that karma can be a bitch and regardless of whether or not there are governmental consequences, I still have to look in the mirror in the morning so I wouldn't do anything that would take away from someone. I do have an insatiable curiosity so hacking into N.O.R.A.D or something like that just for information and to poke around is more my cup of tea. Maybe a B&E into NASA .. climb aboard a shuttle, take it for a joy ride (all those hours spent in flight sim games could actually pay off! lol)

As the Good Book says.. "Mostly Harmless" & I am!

slaveluci -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 4:58:13 AM)

I've seen "The Purge" advertised before other movies we've gone to see recently and it looks good. I also think it has an intriguing premise. I'm afraid my answer is similar to the first part of BitaTruble's in that it's not the law/authorities that keep me from acting out criminal fantasies but rather the power of karma. I am utterly convinced that we all get some type of reckoning for all we do - both "good" and "bad" - and I wouldn't want to add to my "bad" list.

Now....if karma didn't exist to keep me in line....I'm not sure what I might be tempted to do. I'll have to give this some more thought. Good question!

I'd probably hide in my house with a gun, away from all the crazies that take full advantage of a free pass.
I would not commit any crimes because it still wouldn't feel right.

MasterCaneman -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 8:00:39 AM)

I'm with you on that. I've got some people out here in the real world that would love to take a shot at me for a number of reasons. As for myself, I can't see myself going out and doing something extreme, like killing someone or cleaning out a bank. I don't hate the way I used to, and I can't abide theft.

DesFIP -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 8:28:53 AM)

As my morality does not depend on outside laws but is internalized, I can't think of anything except parking in a no parking zone. I live in a town where the downtown was developed during the early colonial years and streets are narrow and curvy. Parallel parking is a bitch and the municipal lot is at the bottom of the hill. I'd love to just leave the car at a corner where people could get by it carefully and just walk right in to where I want to go.

Reading this over, it comes off sort of sad that this is my idea of being wild and crazy.

The premise of the movie is that society evolved to perfection, no war, no crime, etc, because for one day everyone gets to cut loose and kill, murder, burn. Based on the theory that we as a society have crime because the more we suppress a thing, the more it goes out of control. If you let that urge out, it won't explode out. Of course, the movie is an extreme take on that theory

WinsomeDefiance -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 8:52:01 AM)

After watching the previews for that movie - I'd be making sure my family and extended family and unofficially adopted kiddos were all with me and we'd be holing up in the house protecting ourselves. Or maybe we'd live large and have a bonfire in the backyard without a fire permit.

DaddySatyr -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 2:58:26 PM)

Thank you all for the responses.

Again, my mind only flashed on stealing from a bank. I don't think I would do anything other than steal, litter, and possibly be a bit overzealous in protecting my family when the other idiots come a-calling (castle laws, etc.). I don't think I'd wait for them to get in the door or window before I fire a warning shot (aimed at center mass).

Peace and comfort,

Michael

I have to agree with most...Karma is a bitch and I like that she is on my side and has been......so I want to keep her there. I have seen what Karma can do. [sm=wall.gif]

I might live it up and not separate recyclables from trash. Is that wild enough?

deathtothepixies -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 5:03:13 PM)

sounds like a badly thought idea for what will surely be a shit movie.

Everyone grab your guns cos it's anarchy time

MasterCaneman -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 9:26:23 PM)

First thing I'm gonna do is remove that label from my mattress. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THAT, MR. MAN???

You do know the movie is about a family who defies convention, and does NOT go wild that one day?

To each their own. When I first saw the ad, I thought the premise was going to be similar to "The Carnival" by Micheal Fedo.

sexyred1 -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 10:18:44 PM)

I am afraid I have to be different here because I do not believe that people would not indulge their basest sides and go fully functionally crazy, murder, rape, robbery, etc.

That is why a movie like this will likely appeal to so many; they can indulge their sickest selves.

It is funny to me that people who indulge their fantasies regularly here would say that they would not indulge if allowed to run amok for one day.

I know that deep down inside, many many people would go hog wild, they just won't admit here.

Darkfeather -> RE: The Purge (No Spoilers, here) (5/21/2013 11:07:44 PM)

From what I got in the preview (saw it when I saw Evil Dead), it turns into more of a clusterfuck, with the whole town basically turning against the nice no-kill family. So its should have everything
