Tiger will probably win the next dozen majors, he's gonna be so fired up.

I couldn't believe that when I read about it last night. How is somebody who is always in the public eye so stupid?

Not only did he just piss Tiger the fuck off (probably...though Tiger has never been very interested in racial issues, probably because he's got a lot of different ethnicities in his background), sending Tiger into eff-you mode (let's hope)...he probably cost himself substantial endorsement deals. What company is going to want to be known as the company that's endorsed by the racist golfer?

DesFIP -> RE: Foot in Mouth, Sergio Garcia-Style (5/22/2013 10:16:22 AM)

The fact that it would even occur to him to say this shows what a racist he is.

I guess he wasn't around to remember what happened to Fuzzy Zoeller....

I wonder how many gaskets Garcia would blow if someone made a burrito comment about him. (yes, I know he's a Spaniard, not Mexican, but paella is damn good stuff)

Kirata -> RE: Foot in Mouth, Sergio Garcia-Style (5/22/2013 1:21:11 PM)

I especially liked the part of the article where it observed that it didn't matter if it was meant in a racist way.

That about sums up the state of affairs in today's unreal world. It doesn't matter what a person meant or didn't mean anymore. Let's suppose that he was talking about inviting me to dinner, and him being a Spaniard and me being an American, he joked that he would pick me up in a Chevy and serve apple pie. Would that somehow by definition be an "anti-American" comment?

In a related development, the DOJ has issued a letter to the University of Montana directing its administrators to adopt a speech code that recognizes sexual harrassment as any unwelcome behavior, even if an “objectively reasonable person of the same gender in the same situation” would not deem the behavior offensive.

I mean seriously, people need to get a fucking grip.

K.

The whole speech code thing is bullshit, we agree on that, but Garcia doesn't deserve a pass, he fucked up publically, and is going to have to take his medicine.

University speech codes are a whole different ballgame. Given the due process (or rather the lack thereof) typically afforded college students facing disciplinary measures, there are serious First Amendment concerns about those codes, and the DOJ's directive would definitely run into issues, if any student who is punished under it is smart enough to go get a lawyer.

Of course, that's a different matter than the public relations nightmare that is Sergio Garcia's comment. Nobody (to my knowledge) has seriously advocated any kind of criminal or disciplinary action (though the PGA Tour would probably be within its rights to suspend him), but he has to apologize, and he's going to have to live with that comment over his head for some time.

According to ESPN, Sergio apologized. I truly believe that it is within anyone's rights to say what they want as long as they are accountable for what they say.
