All across America there are ten women waiting to take the place in line of every guy who got butthurt over that ad.

BaDUM pishhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hillwilliam -> RE: Sexism And the Feminista Response (5/24/2013 11:46:48 AM)

My favorite part of the whole thing is " “But it can’t be sexist. Just like a black person can’t be racist."

Ummmm has anyone told that dumbass bint that she made racist statement?

It’s the reality of many women’s lives, who get dinner ready, take care of the children, help with homework and do the housework, while the husbands are, in fact, sloth-like.

When I meet a woman actually capable of doing all these things then I'll give a shit. Until then, I think I'll just sit here and watch another rerun of Battlestar Galactica.

Maybe you should turn off the TV and get out some? All the working or homemaking mothers I know do all this and more. It goes with children. A few of the fathers do a lot, more don't.

Just to clarify my earlier comments...

Yeah, she pretty much lost me at the "black people can't be racist" comment. Anyone who has a dictionary that was printed in THIS century understands how we use that word now.....and ANYONE can be racist.

I have to say, at the risk of losing my angry woman card, that I kinda see the point of a man that would be offended. I'm pretty sick of the "man as lazy ass bufoon" thing too. THIS fish needs a bicycle [;)]

I'm gonna go shave my legs and armpits now lolololol

As someone in the advertising business my entire life I know the first rule of advertising is get noticed, no matter what. Negative attention is as good as positive.

Samsung actually has done some brilliant marketing recently and while I have not seen that particular commercial, I really like all the others, so I cannot say whether it is offensive or not.

I personally find the Abercombie & Fitch CEO's comments to be far more offensive since his nasty comments originate from him personally, while the Samsung commercial was written by a room full of "creatives" in an ad agency who thought they were probably being funny and ironic.

Oh, and if I like a brand, I am not going to boycott them for ONE ad. If I found out they tested electronic components on puppies or killed people, then maybe. But not an ad designed as humor.

Kaliko -> RE: Sexism And the Feminista Response (5/24/2013 2:42:20 PM)

FR

Never mind whether it's offensive to men...it's offensive to me. It's stupid. The ad would turn me off not because I dislike how they portray men (though I do) but because I wouldn't want to associate myself with a company that believes witless fart humor is appealing to me. The whole thing reeks of immaturity.

<----....looks down at my Samsung phone. Well, shit.

Rather than try to deal with the many 'differences' in how we read English and see human and American culture, I'll just point out the difficulties arguing subtleties in a language you don't have a great grasp of. The thread on taxation is similar. You use words you think you understand but don't. Close counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. In language, commonality is everything.
Don't feel put upon, with remarkably few exceptions, forums attract people with exactly your disabilities, people whose linguistic reach exceeds their grasp. Like Linus trying to discuss things with Lucy, at some point refuge has to be taken from the usual forum discourse because 'my stomach hurts'.

I'm a native English speaker, a published writer, and a seasoned professional editor. My ruling as a veteran wordsmith is twofold:

(a) What you served up in Post 8 was academic/PC Newspeak stemming from romantic visions of "the oppressed" rather than any actual understanding of life and language.

(b) Your comments to SMM in Post 13 are among the most (undeservedly) arrogant and condescending posts I've ever seen on CM.

I have the OP on hide, but I'll just share my bottom line, nutshell view on this general topic. Patriarchal culture: remove the log from your own eye first.

cloudboy -> RE: Sexism And the Feminista Response (5/25/2013 5:11:36 PM)

Watching TV can induce a coma-like, anti-social, unproductive state --- and its funny that Samsung thinks it can cure that. It's a little bit like McDonalds / Coco Cola advocating healthy eating.

In general I don't like commercials that trade in bad stereotypes, and this was certainly one of them.
