Duskypearls -> Wild plants, edible/medicinal (5/24/2013 6:27:41 AM)

Anyone here, besides myself, interested or knowledgeable about wild plants, and their edible & medicinal aspects?

Rule -> RE: Wild plants, edible/medicinal (5/24/2013 7:23:51 AM)

I have several books on the subject.

I have always been since I dislike Dr and only take meds if I really need to, I much prefer home remedies. My Grandmother was the same way and live to the young age of 97.

I dabble in pharmocognosy a scintilla.

Interested, yes. Knowledgeable, not so much.

I used some dandelion leaves for tea and my sub thought I'd lost it.

I know it might surprise people to know how many poisonous plants are decorating their landscaping :)

I have been interested in reading up on edible plants local to me. Onion, clover and berries can be easily found growing wild in Michigan and are edible.

Going camping in June, and testing out some of this :) If I don't return, feel free to send help lol.

I'm interested, and I've purchased one book so far, The Complete To Guide Edible Wild Plants/Department of the Army ISBN 978-1-0239-692-0. So far, the GF and I have made a couple salads from just what she has growing on her property. Since she doesn't use chemicals on her lawn, they should be safe, but be careful nonetheless. It was interesting to learn how many plants and weeds that I always assumed were just 'there' actually have food potential. I plan on exploring this further, and there's a local group around here that goes out and teaches. I'm definitely looking into that. Be safe, especially with mushrooms, is all I can add.

So were the salads tasty?

Your post reminded me of an old episode of Dharma & Greg, where Dharma's friend comes over and makes a salad from weeds and pill bugs (she told him they were poppy seeds) that she found around San Francisco, including pulling weeds from the sidewalk cracks!

Same here. Interested, not so knowledgeable. I have a few books on the subject.

MN, feel like sharing a bit of your knowledge or experiences?

WEEDS??!!! There's no such thing as weeds. They're just green friends you haven't made yet...and that's my not so humble opinion!

Way to go, MC, keep learning and foraging.

I love the stuff, personally. Was lucky enough to give my 2nd two hour power point presentation on the edible/medicinal/functional aspects of about 10 local, common plants, at the local library last night.

The more I learn, the less I know. Right you are, MC, be very careful and learn your plants very well.

Really?! Did Tasha think you were eating something poisonous, or a wee bit too common?

Believe it or not, all parts of dandelion are edible and medicinal, but those allergic to latex, BEWARE. Dandy's are full of it.

LillyBoPeep -> RE: Wild plants, edible/medicinal (5/24/2013 9:00:17 PM)

I'm not super knowledgeable, I know a little and I'm super curious so I read a lot. Some of my relatives were herbalists by profession, so I picked up a little bit from them. I'm tempted to try something with the forest of nettles growing out back.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Wild plants, edible/medicinal (5/24/2013 9:03:37 PM)

Eat the mushrooms that bruise purple growing on cow poop in the dark after the rain but they will burn up in too much sun.

:)

I think you missed the point. She didn't forage in a park, she pulled the stuff growing in the cracks in the side walk.

Personally, my allergies have been acting up so bad lately, I do not want any green friends.

Very interesting tidbit on the dandelions. I'm not allergic to latex, and always wanted to try dandelion wine, but still had no idea about the latex.

LLady, no point missed. Probably should have put a smiley face on that sentence.

That latex is interesting stuff...good for warts.

Lawd, lawd, you're be hard-pressed to find a more nutritious one than nettle...alfalfa, maybe, but not so many. One of my very favorites, and yummy too.

If you're sure that's what it is, go for it. They've got stingy little hairs on the end of the leaves so you might want gloves. It doesn't bother me, but others react more.

Didja know the sting from nettles is the very thing that comes from those stingy red ants? Yep....formic acid, among other things, so they're not called Stinging Nettles for nuttin'.

Farmers, and others, knew the stinging value in days gone past. With bad arthritis or bee/wasp stings, they're swat the offending area with w/some nettle leaves to relieve the discomfort.

Lucylastic -> RE: Wild plants, edible/medicinal (5/25/2013 5:53:09 AM)

Interesting stuff, I got a email yesterday about the benefits of dandelions , for such things as anaemia, detoxification of the liver and for menopause and a whole host more.. But I havent had chance to look into it deeper to find out if true or not
