NORSLED has a facebook page. You might get help there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/norsled/14182007196?fref=ts

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 9:04:23 PM)

Thank you. They were the one of 4 I called earlier!

NuevaVida -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 9:07:06 PM)

Oh OK, and they weren't able to help? I thought your post said LA and Marin County so I hadn't realized you had contacted them.

In the meantime, can you take him on walks? Cooped up in a crate 24/7 is rough. Can someone else hang onto him for awhile?

Anyone know what likely May happen once his stray hold is up?

Was this really the only question in the OP? Around here, they get two weeks on display and it's adopted or euthanized.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 9:20:52 PM)

They didn't answer. He goes out for walks yes, and he gets some time to just chill in my room no crate, he snarls and lunges at calley any time she walks past or stands by his crate:( so Calley is sent into grandma's house. And we tie him outside and I supervised him today.
Nope, nobody else to take him yet.

Well yeah, but how long are they displayed and what if they fail some of the standard suitability tests.

Why can't the place you got the crate from help you or take him?

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 9:47:03 PM)

I had hoped they would, they are breed specific, but every now and then they take in non goldens. I guess they are to full themselves.

LafayetteLady -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 9:52:31 PM)

Yea, but they still have more contacts than you do and can make some calls. If they aren't willing to help you out (considering you volunteered there and everything), then quite frankly, they don't deserve to run the rescue they do. An animal who needs help is an animal who needs help. I can understand specializing in one particular breed, but not in refusing to to a little work to help find a placement for another breed.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/24/2013 10:11:10 PM)

She made a bunch of calls for me, regarding who he might be. she was the one that found out his chip was a dead end.

If I remember correctly, not all "guns" read all chips. I remember this from a thread about someone wanting to implant one in their slave. Someone posted that there are different "chip readers" and different types of chips. There really is no logical reason why the dog would have a blank chip. It seems as though she just doesn't have the right reader.

Also, calling to find his owner is one thing. You need to place this dog somewhere, and they should be able to help you with that.

It might not be a blank chip, just not leading anywhere. The chip doesn't contain the owner's contact info, just a number. That number is then associated with a file that contains the name, address, and phone number of the owner. But, you have to pay a yearly charge to keep that file active. If you stop paying, they erase the file, and the chip is useless. The only thing that the number itself will tell you is what company owns the chip, since different companies use different numeric strings.

Edited to add: Although if you know the company, I suppose you could call them and offer to pay the yearly charge (usually about $40) to reactivate the account. If they didn't delete the file, you'd at least get the owner's info that way. Then hope that they're considerate enough to reimburse you.

If you take it to the Humane Shelter, they first will give it an exam to see if anything is wrong with it. If there is, they will most likely put it to sleep. If it is healthy then he he put in a cage and after an amount of time, I don't remember the exact amount, if no one claims it, they put it to sleep.

If you're worried about what will happen to it, then find a no-kill shelter.

ETA: RS said two weeks. That sounds about right to me.

Great idea - ask the chip company if you can pay to reactivate the service. If you find the owner that way, ask them to reimburse you.

I raised Siberian huskies, very smart but super independent unless well trained. I cant believe no one would not jump at the chance to give the dog a home. Gorgeous dogs! Most newspapers have free ads sections. Not everyone is looking for lab dogs, and its not as easy as you think to sell to labs. Best you can do is get there full name and google them or check out where the people live if you want to go that far. If they want the dog they will allow that.

THey like a lot of space and a fenced yard is a must.

kalikshama -> RE: We found a siberian husky, and im afraid of what may happen if ee hand him off (5/25/2013 7:47:05 AM)

My ex in Florida rescued a husky. He was not socialized to other dogs, pulled like crazy when on leashes, was small prey aggressive which meant he and the cats could never be in the same room together, had separation anxiety, etc. He ended up being the Best Dog in the World, but this took a TON of work.

R took him to Dog Park several times during the day, which got him used to other dogs. Every day, I walked him at least a half mile in the AM and at least a mile in the evening. It's bad for working dogs to not get a serious amount of exercise.

Kalikshama, that is a BEAUTIFUL husky...wish I can have one but the heat here in TX might get to it...

Would give me the incentive to walk him every day though...

Such a pretty guy! They really love to kill cats, among other small prey OMg that is true. They will wait until you aren't looking! My neighbors poor cat got to brave one day. They also can be very territorial. I hate to remember this but I brought a new Siberian puppy in not from our house to raise. I let him out to potty without supervision, the phone rang I was gone 5 minutes or so and I couldn't find him. My two females killed him, he was only 9 weeks old. As far as kids, a child could poke and pull their tail and these dogs would never bite. Lovely with people but small animals, not a chance.

Craigslist : Free to good home, Found Husky. Add a photo or two.

Free to good homes are never a good idea. Rescues warn about that all the time. That's how animals end up with abusers and as bait dogs.
