My experience has been different than yours. The Fetish Parties that I use to attend in Tampa were very pleasant.I went to my first party when I was only 19 years old, alone.I was certainly nervous but the majority of the people there were very nice.I certainly wasn't rich back then, yet they welcomed me with open arms.I was able to ask questions, even had the courage to ask one of the Dommes there if she would be willing to "scene" with me and she accepted. The fear of hearing no wasn't something I wanted to hear. But I knew I had to take a chance. My bigger regret would have been not asking at all and missing out on a unique experience.I wound up going back to that Fetish party for years.I'm sorry you had a bad experience but not all places are the same.

Safe, Sane and Consensual by Barker and Langdridge gives a great history of the scene, very well researched and referenced.

there is evidence as far back as 9th century bc in a cave named the flogging cave that details the intentional flogging of persons that enjoyed it. leapold massoc and marqi de sade both were only doing what was going on at the time but were vocal about it. ther is alot of intresting things that many often ignored in their reasearch as it did not fit their current ideals or values and was set aside

Torture as an organized field of study, has of course been around forever.

And sexual arousal from giving or receiving pain probably predates written history.

What we currently think of as 'this way of life' ( BDSM and it's trappings, erotic clothing, whips, floggers, equipped play spaces, the formation of groups of devotees, and the whole notion of titles, and roles in relationships), seemed to gel with the 1800s erotic novels in the vein of 'Autobiography of a Flea'.

By the 1950s Betty Page/Kitten with a Whip era, it was already becoming tres mainstream.

While it's fun to hypothesize about secret S&M societies in ancient Rome and so forth, the bulk of the researchable material came much later.

Thank you NiceButMeanGirl.for that link.Excellent information there.

As for this way of life being around since the very beginning,I believe in that. These natural "urges" didn't just start yesterday.I am also interested in how other countries and cultures express themselves.I do know there are literally people from all over the world who are into this.

The only written history of sex that I'm aware of is the ancient Greeks. Arguably the Greeks started modern civilization and democracy as we know it today. I remember reading about it many years ago so I can't cite my sources.

Charles, if you are looking for fem dome stuff, google Venus in Furs, its about contemporary with the Marquie De Sade.

Victorian England, was a ripe breeding ground.

Lastly, look for the bound sets of reprints of the 1950s fetish magazines, Bizzare and Exotique which were primarily femme dom heterosexual focused underground magazines.
