Really, you only need to worry about the person you are traveling with being similar. It's remarkably easy to "do your own thing" on a cruise ship.

My last cruise lasted 32 days (boy did I want to take some of my "staff" home with me, lol). There were people who never left the ship when we were in port. They stayed by the pool, read, etc. Others spent a great deal of time eating (there is so much food!). Still others wanted to take every excursion offered, but then some chose to just get off the ship and find their own way.

There is no obligation to do anything. You don't even have to go to the restaurants if you don't want to, since room service is included in the price of your cruise.

But hey, wouldn't we all like to be able to charter the "Lady Britt?"

I would say it's an increasing issue with neglect. Cruising is becoming more and more popular and the companies are probably trying to reduce downtime and increase cruising time for more profit. It always seems to come down to something that was slated for maintenance months or years ago, and never got fixed.

Been there. Done that. Hated it.

Cruising is how I envious hell. The idea of being stuck on a boat with hundreds and hundreds of people who, potentially, don't travel the way I do is enough to keep me off those boats.

Which cruise line you choose makes a big difference in the experience.

Carnival is the lowest rung on the ladder and is basically a cattle car. That said, if you treat it like a weekend in Vegas, you can have a blast.

Crystal Cruises is absolutely one of the best cruise lines in the world with a select clientele. The ships are small and they have top chefs, a private dining room within the wine cellar and butler service.

Windjammer Barefoot / Windstar Cruises are wind powered schooner type cruises that have about 200 passengers and get into ports that are usually restricted to private ships.

European River Cruises usually have less than 100 people on the ship and give you a chance to get into the culture of the area.

LBP! Nice to see you.

I agree, it always does come down to money, doesn't it?

I don't know how to multi-quote but you and LafayetteLady make good points.

I really dislike crowds and go out of my way to avoid super touristy spots.

My all time favorite vacation was on an island with 150 full-time residents that only has 4 hotels each housing less than 100 people each. My resort was at full capacity with only 24 guests. Dive, lunch, nap, dive, nap, drink, dinner, bed = heaven :)
