What is the difference between a sub and a slave ?

A slave is considered to be more submissive than a sub. Everyone has their own ideas about the specific line that separates the two, and nobody's ideas match anyone else's.

Many different threads... many different answers. My feeling is... the only difference is how the couple defines it themselves for the purpose of their own relationship. In other words, if an owner decides to call his/her property sub, that is their decision. if he/she decides to call them slave, again, their decision.

I think it is one of those questions that is kind of left in the person's head, in terms of what they consider themselves. I had seen deep D/s's where the D has total control, etc, yet s considered them a sub; I have seen people with a relatively light D/s where they considered themselves a slave *shrug*

Some will tell you unless it is a total TPE where the s has no control, literally have given the M total power to do anything to them/with them and the like that they are`not a slave. Some will argue that a sub has a need to serve but doesn't consider themselves property, rather that they are the willing servant of the other,whereas a slave has a need to be owned and controlled.....like I said, I personally think that it ia up the eye of the beholder, if a couple thinks they are M and s, or D and s, that is there business:). About the only place where that might have more strict meanings would be in the leather community, where those following a specific tradition might have more rigid definitions and protocols.

I consider myself to be both at this point.I use to ask this question a lot too before.I realize I don't care about labels anymore.I know who I am deep down and that's all that matters to me,whatever name someone wants to call it.

In the end, a label is simply a place to start. How you define it is going to have to be explained to anyone you meet anyway. Someone calling themselves a Master may very well be one, but they may not match exactly or even at all with your idea of a Master. So, while you may believe that the label of slave is going to be perfect for the label of Master the truth is, it's not the labels which have to match, it's the people wearing them.

I beg to disagree in that although a slave may appear to be more "submissive", in fact the key difference between the sub and slave relationship roles is negotiation.

A submissive takes the subordinate position in a D/s relationship. The degree of control is negotiated by agreement, they do not have to surrender all control.

A slave, contrary to common belief, does not have to be a submissive or have a submissive personality. The agreement, relationship style is TPE, or total authority exchange. A slave surrenders total control in a TPE. Obedience isn't optional or negotiable.

As you note, this makes a slave appear more submissive when is fact the key dynamics look the same on the surface, motives and rewards behind the scene are different.
