outlier -> Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Grades (6/25/2006 4:08:01 PM)

Life is often funnier than anything we could make up.
I love irony and non harmful ironic humor. I heard
this on NPR the other morning and wanted to share it.

They were reviewing the papers of Dr. Martin Luther King at
the auction house Sotheby's before the scheduled sale. Which
has since been canceled.

Among the papers were his transcripts from seminary school.
They noted that a blue book with an A was on display but his
transcript did show that in one subject he did get a "C".
The subject was Public Speaking.

Here is the link so you can play the clip for yourself.

Now that just makes me smile for some reason. Maybe because I do love irony.

As a former professor, I can assure you that grades many times don't have a strong correlation with reality.  This is particularly true where what is being tested is not factual but creative.

This was one reason when I was teaching a magazine writing class I would change the grade of any student who sold a classroom assignment to a publication to an A regardless of whatever grade he or she had received for the course.

As one of my favorite authors put it "The only writing award that means anything has "Pay to the order of" written on it.

Let's not forget that Charlie Chaplin won 3rd place when he competed in a Charlie Chaplin look a like contest.

Churchill according to his record at school was an intellectual idiot but it never stopped him winning the Nobel Prize for literature, amongst other things he achieved in his life. Though cultural prizes are a nonsense but his History Of The English Speaking Peoples is an accomplished work. Most people can get good grades if they study hard enough.

Educational validation is really like gaining a licence to operate in certain spheres but doesn't make those people who have a licence the best in their field.

As the saying goes 'Those that can, do. Those that can't, teach.'  That is a little unfair on talented teaches who should be thanked for teaching.
