1975 : Tornado Outbreaks Blamed On Global Cooling

I guess AlGore was so busy inventing the Internet back in the seventies that he missed this one.

Ha ha ha.

Chuckle, chuckle.

Snigger.

Is that the right response? I just want to play along, here.

We still have a lot more to learn about the natural system we inhabit. It would probably go a little faster if we didn't have so many people looking to get hysterical, or find the one true way of the day.

Were`nt they still selling leaded gas in '75'?

Oh yeah......let`s go back to that great idea again.........[:D]

FR

I wasn't aware of Mr. (Dr.?) Goddard's work, so thanks to Liz for bringing it to my attention.

Does anyone know what kind of scientist he is? I couldn't find a bio on his site.

The article on how the Holocaust began with gun control should be an interesting read.

The Newsweek article the blogger uses is functionally the last gasp of a conjecture with little scientific support even at the time the popular press was reporting about it.

Now of course we have overwhelming evidence that the planet is warming at a very high rate and that anthopogenic CO2 is the primary cause.

We do? (see link for whole story)

The increase in global temperatures since the late 19th century just reflects the end of the Little Ice Age. The global temperature trends since then have followed not rising CO2 trends but the ocean temperature cycles of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). Every 20 to 30 years, the much colder water near the bottom of the oceans cycles up to the top, where it has a slight cooling effect on global temperatures until the sun warms that water. That warmed water then contributes to slightly warmer global temperatures, until the next churning cycle.

"While scientists and environmentalists have used the daily milestone to highlight the buildup of greenhouse gases generated by human activities, it's the rate of rise that is most important.

That rate, measured by the Keeling Curve, shows atmospheric CO2 levels are rising at unprecedented rates, driven largely by the burning of fossil fuels over the past two centuries. The curve, pioneered in 1958 by scientist Charles D. Keeling, is the longest-running tally of carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere and is maintained by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. Readings there hit 399.46 Saturday.

The weekly average reading at Mauna Loa was 399.52 last week, up nearly 22 points from a decade ago, according to the NOAA.

Many scientists have warned that carbon dioxide readings must be brought down to 350 ppm to avoid severe climate impacts and stall "feedback loops" that will exacerbate the rise.

Current ratios of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere remain at levels not seen in more than 3 million years, when sea levels were as much as 80 feet higher than current levels.

For the previous 800,000 years, CO2 levels never exceeded 300 ppm, and there is no known geologic period in which rates of increase have been so sharp. The level was about 280 ppm at the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, when the burning of fossil fuels began to soar.

"I wish it weren't true, but it looks like the world is going to blow through the 400-ppm level without losing a beat," said Scripps geochemist Ralph Keeling, who has taken over the Keeling curve measurement from his late father. "At this pace we'll hit 450 ppm within a few decades."

The claim that the UK Met Office claims no warming for 20 years is another outrageous lie. What is true? The Met Office reduced its projection of warming over the next decade by about 20%. http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/news/releases/archive/2013/decadal-forecasts

Yes we do. The evidence is so overwhelming the Koch bros. pet climate skeptic had to admit it was happening and CO2 was the cause.

The only folks that really can not accept the notion that the Theory of Climate Change is both real and taking place, are usually the ones with the most limited understanding of science. They are also not surprisingly falling under the catagories of "low information voter" and "conservative voter".

Case in Point....

I've hiked the White Mountains of New Hampshire for thirty years. I have taken a large number of photographs over that time period. Its wonderful country with many spots that just were picture perfect. Now if my skills with a camera were perfect, I might be a photographer right now. Anyways, I saw a large section of trees once that were just....dead. When I looked in previous photos of that same area, the trees looked healthy (i.e. green) during the same time period. So I inquired with the park rangers about the observation. They said the trees simply were not getting the same amount of water they did years before. So the question was....why were the trees not getting enough water? That is an answer best left to a researcher with more time to devote examining the causes.

I'm more likely to take the researcher's word for the cause(s) than some conservative lunatic. The amount of evidence gathered already shows that the theory is proved quite correct already. Scientists are not arguing about this. How climate change takes place over wide regions of the planet, are ALSO, not debated; they are pretty much in agreement here as well. Its what to do about the changes taking place that concern scientists right now. Unfortunately, to many conservatives in our country are simply so clueless as to render them "incompetent" voters. They view scientific theories as just guesses or 'what ifs' and really do not understand the importance of a theory. Very low scientific education among Americans is pushing this nation down. Its scientific knowledge and breakthroughs that got this nation to become the only super power in the world. Why is science such a hard concept for conservative voters?

All these people really need to get together on this. This group says global cooling, Westboro and Pat Robertson say it's all the gays' fault. Make a decision, people. I personally blame manbearpig and people who insist on wearing plaid and stripes in the same outfit.

OMG, climate change is my Dad's fault!

cordeliasub -> RE: 1975 : Tornado Outbreaks Blamed On Global Cooling (5/30/2013 8:31:16 AM)

Climate change could be one of my uncles' fault.....he seems to enjoy passing gas with alarming frequency.....

~fr~

Ocean acidification is a far greater issue as regards climate change, to the point where I'm inclined to say "who cares about global warming?" despite the temperature shifts we experience causing annual flooding in parts of my country that were never designed to handle flooding at all. Whether or not humans are the cause of the changes, as per the scientific consensus, there's no denying that a change is in progress, and that it needs to be dealt with, no matter its cause. And while temperature is part of that, the acidity of the ocean is a far greater concern.

Of course, we had a bunch of deniers as regards chlorofluorocarbons, too, prior to the Montreal Protocol, possibly the one instance in human history where we as a species came close to long term thinking. This time, the impacts are higher, and DuPont doesn't have an expiring patent on CO2 coming up, so we're not likely to do much about it yet. By the time we do, it'll hurt a lot more, but perhaps we'll learn.

IWYW,
— Aswad.
