Maygen -> What is leather? (5/28/2013 10:08:56 PM)

Not the material made from dead cows, but the lifestyle. This is a question I have began to explore.

The leather community where I am at has all but died out, the old guard that are left typically has no interest in reviving it.

There are a few leather folk left that I have been talking to. What I've been basically tasked with is exploring what New Leather is, what does it all entail and what I might be able to to to re-establish a Leather community.

I am mostly looking for resources and information about protocols, rules, living the lifestyle, etc. A specific area of research necessary is about females and the leather lifestyle, seeing as it very much was about gay males for the longest time.

Any information/resources that anyone may know of would be appreciated.

If you are Leather, Old Guard or New Leather, I would love to hear your experiences within the Leather lifestyle.

I'm thinking Lady Pact might be able to answer this best. She will be along soon.

What about Resident Sadist? I believe he is an "old leather guy"

You may also wish to head on over to FET and join one of the many leather groups over there.

Your question is pretty wide and somewhat confusing. I had a look at your location and I think I probably figured out the problem.

I happen to be in Alaska and I presented at a leather function last year with some folks from around your area. Yeah, you're pretty much in New Leather territory. You don't honestly have the benefit of Old Leather where you are because it wasn't the same kind of culture. Which means, you are pretty much starting from the ground up if you are interested in getting a leather community going.

As I'm reading it, your question is kind of two fold. One being learning about the leather culture itself (protocols, etiquette, etc) and the other being how to jump start an actual leather community. You can't accomplish the second without the first. (It's kind of hard to start leather events without knowing how.)

There are tons of resources that you can find through Fet but to be quite frank, they are going to be rather far from you. There are plenty of folks who can recommend articles for you to start reading. If you hit the book list that is a sticky on this forum, you're looking for books from Dr Robert Rubel. You might also want to have a look through the webpage for the Leather Archives Museum in Chicago. Specifically, check out the "Women's Leather History Project" for your area of interest.

Leather, in My opinion, is about living your life a certain way. It's not 'kink' and it's not BDSM. It's not something you just do at events. It's a dedication to leather traditions, community, and education. In your situation, that's going to mean a lot of research.

Best wishes and happy reading.

Well, LP answers the OP just above this post and, as usual, she and I are on the same page.

THANKS, LP! (for saving me the keystrokes. LOL!)
