Maple Grove, Minn. - While members of Pilgrims United Church of Christ sang uplifting hymns during Sunday services, the vandalism found outside of the church that has many disheartened.

"Violence or defaming someone's church is not a very Christian attitude," says long-time member Karen Udstrand. "It's very disappointing."

As attendees entered the small, Maple Grove church on Sunday morning they were greeted by vandalism. Someone had thrown eggs at the church's windows and scribbled "church of Soddom and Gomorrah" on the exterior walls.

The staff at Pilgrims United Church of Christ believes the vandals oppose their view on same-sex marriage.

"We are a very progressive voice in Maple Grove," says Pastor Robin Raudabaugh. "This was a very hate-filled act."

This isn't the first time the church has become a target. Last year, "Vote No" signs were taken from church property and last month graffiti was spotted on church walls at the same time the Minnesota Senate voted to allow gay marriage.

"Some people wonder if our message is getting out," says Raudabaugh. "But this proves that people do hear us."

Maple Grove police officials have told the church staff that they will keep a closer watch around the building.

Jesus Christ, Book of Matthew, Chapter 5, Verse 11:
quote:

Blessed are you, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Yes, some Christians in the United States ARE under attack for being Christians.

I have one question. What was their view on gay marriage?

Due to the facts that "church of Soddom and Gomorrah" was written on their wall and the pastor said "We are a very progressive voice in Maple Grove," I would tend to consider a distinct possibility that they were one of the few churches that supports gay marriage.

If the above is true, that throws a whole new spin on the OP doesn't it?

They weren't attacked for being Christian. They were attacked for being insufficiently Christian probably by the WEAL and TWUE Christians.

ETA. Lookie what I found. http://pilgrimschurchucc.org/OurBeliefs.html

" The United Church of Christ is the denominations of firsts. We were the first to ordain an African American Pastor (1785), a woman (1853), an openly gay person (1972) and the first to affirm same sex gender marriage equality (2005)."

It appears based on my above post that some Christians in the United States are under attack BY Christians.[:D]

30 seconds of research goes a long way.

And your point is?

I live in Northern Ireland. I personally have been attacked for being an atheist. Not paint at a building, but spat at and shoved.

I can piss further. I win.

TNDommeK -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 6:11:54 AM)

I think people can be dumbasses no matter what denomination or religious organization (or lack of) they claim.

I agree completely.

And attacking someone is always wrong.

But it's not because they were Christian. It's because the other people were/are dumbasses.

Quite. And, seemingly, by other Christians.

Tkman117 -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 6:33:21 AM)

If christians are being attacked, it's usually a certain HATEFUL group christians being attacked. But said attack is never against Christianity or the teachings of christ, these attacks are usually against the archaic and distasteful ideologies being spouted by these christian groups. For example: the Westboro baptist church and their hate against gays.

Also, other so called "attacks" are usually just enforcements on the separation of church and state, such as religious texts being hung in schools or christmas trees being present and no other religious symbols in government institutions. These attacks are simply pointing out circumstances that are unfair, and against the law. That's not even technically an attack, it's doing what's right. Christians deserve no different treatment than Jews, Muslims or Atheists.

Convert ye heathens to the true religion, the worship of the Goddess Olivia Wilde, who is actually the earthly form of Aphrodite.

Actually, fundamentalist Christians are nut jobs. They suffer from a contagious form of delusional insanity.

crazyml -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 6:38:43 AM)

I think in this case it's a Christian group being attacked by some of the hateful ones.

This is unfortunate. A progressive form of Christianity possibly being persecuted by a less progressive form of Christianity. Oh for those who might not know, evangelical Christianity was invented here in America so.....just saying. Granted I think all forms of Christianity from(including) Catholicism on forward are complete bunk. I prefer those nice Orthodox Eastern Christian types. Not some setup created by Emperor Constantine as a way to unite the empire that pretty much held onto much of the mythos of the Roman Pantheon of gods.

Interesting. I'd like, at this point to mention John Wesley, Calvin, George Whitfield (yes he ended in the states but he started in the uk), Bunion and John Newton to name but a few.

that is certainly the impression I got from the piece, so if the OP is saying that the price you pay is having to deal with assholes, then I agree. Of course that goes for anyone living here whether or not they are christians. Fact is no matter what group you belong to, there will be assholes who will do mean shit just because they are assholes. Luckily the majority of the people who I deal with just want to live their own lives and get along.

Fightdirecto -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 8:51:22 AM)

My primary reason for bringing this news story to peoples' attention: we hear, all too often, some allegedly "Christian" group claiming to be "under attack" because the government is preventing them from "exercising their religious beliefs" (often when that "religious belief" has no basis in the teachings of Jesus Christ). Like the character in "Monty Python & the Holy Grail", they run around screaming "I'm being oppressed!"

Here we have some Christians who can legitimately say they are being attacked for actually following the teachings of Jesus Christ - and most likely by un-Christian "Christians". I suspect that if the vandals were caught, arrested and tried for this crime, they would claim that arrest would be persecution for "exercising their religious beliefs".

GotSteel -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 9:34:15 AM)

That act was reprehensible.

Sounds like they got vandalized for not being Christian enough, we get that all the time. Atheists can empathize with the congregation of Pilgrims United Church of Christ, these hate crimes suck.

Powergamz1 -> RE: The Price You Pay For Being A Christian In The U.S.A. (6/3/2013 10:01:24 AM)

America was founded on Christians attacking Christians. Just ask Mary Dyer.
