For someone who claims to be so critical of his own country's society, Aswad, you sure do fail spectacularly at demonstrating just how bad it is there.

We have our moments. My point is more along the lines of it being virtually impossible to do worse without trying, for any country that has a few basics in place, like a rehabilitative justice system, universalized healthcare, universalized education, welfare you can live off, decent wages for the common man, and so forth. Hell, we even have oil.

In terms of quality of life, we're #3, behind Switzerland and Ireland.

In the areas most important to me, we aren't even in the top ten.

Can you tell I set the bar quite high?

Ah. Right. Well, we're not so big on that. We prefer to have our kids when we're well established.

I knew a pregnant teenager once, so I know they exist... they're just rare.

When he'd counted all the hands, listened to every student offer "fell 16%"....."went down something like 16% sir?"...and he (correctly) said.....

"You are all imbeciles!!!!! What the fuck has the apple crop in Canada got to do with the VD rates of 13 year old girls in Seattle????!!!!!"

so you answered that question with the same answer then???

That was funny Lookie.. I think I would have liked your teacher..

I actually thought he was brilliant.

I hear in TN. A man can beat his wife on Sunday with a stick. However the width can be no thicker than his thumb.

Watch out ladies!

When I was stationed at Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS, I found out the hard way that the average Mississippi native thinks the Civil War is still ongoing. It probably is more accurate to take the dimmest possible view of the governor's statements.

There are a lot of decent people there that don't take that point of view. They may be around my age but I've known some older folk who aren't still living in the dark ages. However, I know there are some there. But they are dying off anyway. I know that sounded ugly but dang. But there's people like that everywhere.

Maybe things have changed in the 20+ years since I was there. I hope so. I just got really fed up really quickly with being called "Damn Yankee n----r lover" everywhere I went. I even got called that in a strip mall by one of the shopkeepers. I lost my temper at that one, turned on the guy and said, "Yeah I am. What are you gonna do about it?" Fortunately, I was with a friend who dragged me out before I got myself into more trouble than I could handle.

I agree with PeonForHer, I think you're being way to hard on your home country. The U.S. claims to be the leader of the free world, yet we don't have any of those things you call basics. If we had universal health care, I wouldn't have wound up committing the felony I spent two years in prison for (I admit, there's a long line between the injuries I sustained in a serious car accident and my offense, but it is a direct one). And if we had a truly rehabilitative legal system, I wouldn't be having the nearly insurmountable problems finding work that I am having now. What areas does the place fall short in?

I would imagine you DID get tired...I mean, talking to every single resident in Mississippi. Cause, a few idiots and a shopkeeper wouldn't be a large enough sample with which to generalize about an entire STATE, right?

the decline of education

the decline in education is cuz the govt considers education "discretionary" & it gets cut along with other "services" taxpayers think they are paying taxes for.. the dude even admits this- "Bryant also noted the lack of investment in US schools had adversely affected educational outcomes."

listen to this interview about how your States decide who gets money (less going to local govt), and who benefits (pensions, etc).. this is one of the few books that actually make me want to go out and buy it (rather than read at the library)..
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4KDyqfk8Yo

eta- where the heck is Owner? shouldnt he be posting here about its all the Repub's/GOP's fault & to stop blaming women?

yeh the mini skirt and no bras happened at the same time, but its solely the government and has nothing to do with women. Most women at that time did not want this liberation shit but the government and certain mouthpieces pushed it on society. (just like the partiot act and ohaha care and every other damn thing they do that we dont want). Those of us who are old enough to remember know the score and George explained what they did very eloquently.

and that would be correct.

insurgents took over and reconstructed the government by their own self professed authority. People, the inhabitants, of this this nation, north and south, never forgot how they got fucked by the land grab, and how the constitution was completely shit on as was suffrage for the southern states.

Its a good fight, I am glad people remember.

Yes, I remember vividly so many female HS and college students, workers, etc. getting arrested en masse, hauled away in the paddy wagon for "failure to wear mini-skirt," quickly ripping their bras off on the way downtown, so they wouldn't get caught on that violation too.

What conclusion would you come to when it did happen every time I left the base? Bear in mind, too, that these obscenities weren't just passed between two people in close quarters. They were said loudly and with others to witness, which tells you that the behavior wasn't just the "one idiot" but whole packs of them. Moreover, I wasn't the only one of my fellow airmen who got that treatment and worse.

I would hardly think that the culture surrounding a military base is the same culture as all native Mississippians. I grew up on military bases. We werent shielded from anything. Those who live around bases, for the most part, are either bitter because they see others going places while they are stuck, or they are seeking opportunities that an influx of people in one area can draw. Many who lived outside of Ft Bragg were not "natives". Im willing to bet the same is true where you were as well.
