The whole point of any such guidelines is to re-inforce in people's minds that there are risks to this kind of play, that they need to know them and make decisions based on that. Some take SSC to mean rigid rules of thou shalt not, whereas RACK is more free form, freedom to take more risks, but to me it doesn't matter, because when people play the idea is you think about the risk and make informed decisions about taking them or not. For example, I suffer from claustrophobia, so there are things I cannot do in play others would consider old hat, like being in a total bondage hood with no eye holes or anything......would totally freak me out, it could literally drive me off the deep edge, and whether SSC or RACK, would be something I wouldn't do, period. The problem people have with SSC is that it seems to them too limiting, rigid bounds and so forth. A friend of mine into Scuba Diving made the analogy that SSC is like standard recreational diving, that limits you to about 100',how long you stay down and has standards of what you should and shouldn't do to limit risk (like minimizing exposure to the bends, if I remember correctly, I am not a diver), whereas with RACK, it is more like more adventurous diving, like going deep, crazy wreck diving, etc.. I agree with others, the importance isn't the labels, it is in learning what the risks are, and deciding whether you and your partner(s) want to take them, and how you take them...in other words, learn and communicate:)
