www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-night-stalker-richard-ramirez-dead
30 years after his first known victim, 28 years after he was caught, 24 years since he was convicted, 23 years since he was sentenced to die, and 7 years since the conviction and sentence were affirmed by the state's supreme court, Richard Ramirez is dead of liver disease.

They say the medical care in the California prison system isn't up to snuff, but right now I'm thinking it's the most efficient thing in the process.

If he wasnt in pain, then it was not a perfect universal judicial end.

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defence.

Please explain to me how 4 years between being caught and convicted can even remotely be construed as a "speedy trial."

Well, if you read the story about that particular trial, the DA was ready early in the process, the Defense filed motion after motion trying to delay the trial, trying to get Richard Ramirez declared insane.

In the majority of criminal cases, the prosecutors are ready to proceed, if they werent, they would not have filed the charges. It is the defense that usually causes the case to drag out trying everything in the book to get their client a reduced charge, anything that will help their client avoid the death penalty.

Personally, I think the mob in LA that cornered the man should not have stopped with just a severe beating they gave him.
