I mean it is not like you can take a gallon glass jar, stick it outside and brew the stuff, like you can tea.

HAHAHAHAHA

Uh, that is EXACTLY how I brew it.

Yes, you can. There's more than one method of making coffee. One of them is cold brew, water, soak strain drink.

Athena, what you said about "upfront money" for supplies and such is the thing I run into all the time on my job when trying to get people to cook at home rather than eating out or microwaveable foods. I've been trying to talk one guy into buying some cooking utensils for over 2 years--he lives on subs and the soup kitchen lunches mostly. At least he gets a moderately balanced meal at the soup kitchen.

You have a dollar tree nearby? He can get some stuff there. Not great quality of course, but it is still "cooking stuff."

Second hand stores often have basic kitchen stuff at great prices. My cast iron skillet is from a resale shop and, IIRC, cost me $5.

This is what I do. I make a cup of instant coffee (I can't tell the difference in the iced drink), a cup would make about 3 cups of iced coffee, so I throw most of that out. Into a glass full of ice, I pour it one third full of my instant coffee, add either sugar free coffee flavoring syrup, which is $10 a bottle but makes 10-15 glasses of iced coffee, then fill it the rest of the way with almond milk, which is what I drink anyway. on rare occasions I splurge on a flavored refrigerated coffee creamer to use instead of the syrup. I know my drinks end up less than a dollar a glass, and I really enjoy them. I'm not worried about the health concerns either - cutting out artificial sweetener is for someone much further along in cutting out things, and the almond milk is naturally low fat, and high calcium. For a sweet treat, it's a rather good choice.

I'm just curious. Does almond milk taste like milk or almonds? I don't drink milk, but if it tastes more like Almonds I might try it.

I'd say neither... closer to almonds than milk though.

The better the coffee, the less crap you need to adulterate it with before you can drink it.

True story.

FWIW, I'm a food sissy (unadventurous eater). It was just introduced to me and on my palate anyway it tastes like slightly sweetened milk. I do it with classic combos like "milk & cookies" which is unusual for me.

LGH, like others have said, if you think your diet is punishment then you're not doing it right. You need a lifestyle change, not a diet. Diets will not work. You have to change the way you live.

If you have one of those coffee drinks only once in a great while, then there's no problem with having one. But because you have diabetes, even just that one might be enough to kill you if it's loaded with sugar and crap.

I had an uncle who was close to 400 lbs until one day he ended up in the hospital and found out he had diabetes and now had to take shots on a daily basis. The doctor told him if he didn't change the way he lived he'd be dead in a week. That scared him enough to go from 400 to 150 lbs in one year...yup, one year. It was hard for any of us to believe he was still the same man because he was so different. He started eating smaller portions, kept to a diet of lean meats, vegetables and fruits and cut out sweets other than fruit. Once he got used to it he always wondered why he never did it earlier. He felt better, had more energy and was generally just much happier with life and got to be around longer for his wife, children and grandchildren.

So just stop to think about what you are doing to your body. Yes, you will fall off the track but you just hop back on and do it again until it becomes just normal to you.

Now I admit since I started a desk job again, I've definitely fallen off the track but am now realizing it's hurting my health so I'm back on the track again hoping that I haven't done any irreversible damage.

I know you like all those sweets and you see them as reward but really...they're punishment.
