kalikshama -> # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 7:57:41 AM)

MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell took Tennessee Rep. Stephen Fincher to task for using the bible to justify making billions in cuts to the food stamp program, while, as a member of the House Agriculture Committee, attempting to justify the millions of dollars he receives in federal farm subsidies.

These Republicans love welfare for the wealthiest among us, but if you're a poor starving child in America, well, you'd better go find yourself a job. O'Donnell also took the members of Congress to task as a whole for refusing to do something about the massive conflicts of interest we see like this one, where they're allowed to vote on policies that are going to benefit themselves financially. He's absolutely correct that it ought to be illegal, but it's not.

...Undergirding Fincher’s sloppy exegesis is an old conservative fiction that people who rely on food stamps are lazy parasites who mooch off the government and refuse to work. In reality, most of the country’s 47 million food stamp recipients are children or the elderly, and many are employed. A 2012 report from the USDA found that 45 percent of SNAP recipients were under 18 years of age, nearly 9 percent were age 60 or older, and more than 40 percent lived in households with earnings. [...]

Fincher’s misuse of scripture is also a slight to disabled Americans who rely on SNAP to stay afloat. Americans with disabilities, many of whom are elderly or military veterans, are burdened with any number of maladies that make full-time work difficult, if not impossible. Far from encouraging freeloading behavior, food stamps and programs like Meals on Wheels help us honor our national commitment — and, for many Americans, a religious duty — to assist our fellow citizens when they need us most. Fincher is free to draw his own conclusions about the Bible and its teachings. But using scripture to accuse millions of Americans of being lazy freeloaders is not only spiritually bankrupt, it’s also politically stupid.

...Fincher has received $3.48 million in federal farm subsidies since 1999, according to the Environmental Working Group, an advocacy group that annually obtains figures from the Agriculture Department. In 2012, he received $70,574.

He ranks first among current members of Congress in receipt of such money, according to the group.

Further, in its deliberations over the farm bill, the House committee — with Fincher going along — voted to make the cut in food stamps while increasing crop insurance by $9 billion over 10 years.

We should retitle this thread...

"Rich powerful guy on welfare is pissed poor unwashed masses get some too"

~FR~

OK, this is where things get derailed.

When are we going to get a heads-up and quit pouting, pro/con, what the media tells us, demands of us, to be 'pro' or 'con' about?

Nothing about the subsidy and tax bounty to ConAgra and Monsonto, nothing about the immense tax 'service' to the record-breaking profit-earning oil companies, etc.

Everything is put in terms of "redistribution," because we are too eagerly lead away from the fact (as this article well demonstrates) that the funnel is locked into place to 'distribute' the actual wealth to those who control it to begin with, and we are too stupid to recognize it.

Yes, let's keep our attention to the "hot button" or "button-pushing" 'issues,' here. You know, the stuff that is ultimately and utterly useless, but just SO much fun!

Sure... exactly as I did. For that matter I didn't see RealOne's response containing any left/right stuff either. Unless I'm missing something YOU are the only person who's brought up anything about parties or left/right or pro/con here. This is a straight-forward issue of a 1%'er with his fingers in the till sprinkled with a liberal does of hypocrisy. What's that got to do with progressive or conservative?

njlauren -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 4:15:51 PM)

There is an even bigger issue here, highlighted by this guy, that the same people crying about welfare, government money supporting people who won't work, how government takes money (presumably away from them), to give to other people, and so forth. Many of them are from the farm belt, yet agricultural subsidies are as much as 100 billion a year, depending on who you talk to. From huge government subsidies to the sham that is ethanol (that has made corn farmers in the midwest very happy, not to mention Cargill, ADM and so forth), to paying farmers not to grow certain crops, to subsidized water, the subsidies for things like the production of high fructose corn syrup and the like, farm subsidies are huge, and it should be noted that when the GOP has come out with its plans to shrink the government, defense (another boondoggle) and ag subsidies were not touched....ever wonder why? (Don't get me going on defense, probably half the defense budget is for weapons systems and keeping bases open that in today's world make no sense......another kind of government transfer of wealth to certain sectors). The rallying cry of many in the tea party movement is "I don't get anything from the government", when they do, only difference is, their is hidden (and think about this one, these huge subsidies are happening as global prices for commodities are at their highest levels ever...)

"Food stamps,"?

No, that's not the least bit knee-jerking political, is it?

Most assuredly, no congressperson has any dog in that fight at all, aside from the one highlighted.

Midwestern Democrats have been taking industrial farming-interest money for decades, but this just now came to someone's attention. Was it a Republican this time? Heck if I can keep up with all that, darned good thing that somebody is, though.

Thanks for calling me out, there.

You're my pal.

We are either not reading the same thread or not speaking the same language. I am TOTALLY lost.

This is what I read, at the top of the OP;

"MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell took Tennessee Rep. Stephen Fincher to task for using the bible to justify making billions in cuts to the food stamp program, while, as a member of the House Agriculture Committee, attempting to justify the millions of dollars he receives in federal farm subsidies."

I'm probably going all ape-shift, and 'conspiracy theory,' and a dozen other things in my bewildered head in somehow reading anything about "food stamps" or "farm subsidies" in any of the above, actual quotes in direct attribution thereby notwithstanding.

JeffBC -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 4:57:22 PM)

I dunno dude. All I can tell you is that I sort of think I ought to be agreeing with you if only I could figure out what your position was. I'm asking this seriously, are you a native English speaker because if not that'd explain it.

Edwynn -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 5:15:22 PM)

To start with, 'Food Stamps' would be acknowledged by most to be a "hot button" issue. I abhor politics, haven't had a TV in 20 years, etc., but even I can figure that one out.

It makes some people get off their couch and turn the radio up even louder, so the spouter of hate reaches the audience better. So, why are CNN and Bill Mahr all about rattling the cages of these putatively 'lesser beings'?

Is there that much hate in the world?

Please think it through. I read your posts and I disagree and agree, etc., but I don't see hate there, and I hope you do not see such on this end.

I'm just trying to get people to think about what they are doing, what they are saying, etc. Not the easiest task, when minds are ideologically or politically constrained.

Yeah, you're right and that's how I see your posts too. I'm telling you that I am STILL not understanding what you are trying to have me think through. I don't even have a clue on the topic.

I'd like to buy a vowel.

Edwynn -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 6:20:53 PM)

On that subject, I once lived in a SC town 50 miles (I think) NW of Vanna White's home town. Come on down! OK, that's a different show, sorry.

Yes, I am obtuse, indirect, and make actual effort to not make sense sometimes.

Considering what nonsense politicos spout on a regular basis, it's just my (somewhat intentional) meaningless mode of response to that.

As to the subject of the OP;

Some bible-thumper is bitching about food stamps.

Yawn ...

Somebody please wake me up when there is actually anything fun going on around here.

I've gone to the trouble of linking or explaining outright a bunch of OECD stats on health care, maternity/paternity leave, etc.

People hate that.

Bible-thumpers are so much more fun.

JeffBC -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 6:24:22 PM)

Gotcha.

NOW I understand. Thank you. Your point was that you don't want to be understood and you don't really care about this conversation so really you've just been wasting my time while you toyed with me. Thanks. That actually makes sense.

Edwynn -> RE: # 1 Congressional recipient of farm subsidies pushes for a $20 billion cut in food stamps (6/8/2013 6:33:04 PM)

I edited my post, hope that helps. Good to know that politicians actually make sense to somebody. Good on ya there.

But sorry to waste your time otherwise, in any event.

F*ck if I'm going to mention financial institution capital requirements legislation or any other such thing.

Sorrryy!

I'm out.
