ORIGINAL: njlauren There is no difference between a kilt and a skirt, they are basically the simplest form of clothing outside a loincloth:). I am not entirely sure, but I believe in traditional Scots culture, Kilts were only worn by men, they had the colors of their clan on them, and it was their preserve (women of course wore skirts). Or at least that is my impression after reading Diana Gabaldon.....:) The Scots are who I was thinking of, actually, since they (kilts) originated in the Scottish Highlands. And yes, it has the tartan of their clan (or did years ago. I guess some here in the US don't necessarily know what their tartan looks like). I believe the way it is structured is also different now that I am thinking about it. There is a particular way it is made with the pleats. I did a quick search. Kilts
