tazzygirl -> IRS scandal "closed"? (6/10/2013 7:58:10 AM)

The ranking Democrat on the committee leading the investigation of the IRS said Sunday that the matter is effectively settled and had some unusually harsh words for committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.).

In a letter to Issa, House oversight committee ranking member Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) expressed disappointment with the chairman’s handling of the issue, suggesting he had made unsubstantiated allegations and had selectively distributed information that back up his claims, while not releasing other findings.

“Your actions over the past three years do not reflect a responsible, bipartisan approach to investigations, and the Committee’s credibility has been damaged as a result,” Cummings wrote.

Cummings then detailed an unreleased interview last week with an anonymous IRS manager who labeled himself a “conservative Republican.” The manager essentially said it was he who started the targeting of the groups and — contrary to GOP allegations — said that the White House wasn’t involved and that it wasn’t politically motivated.

“I think this interview and these statements go a long way … showing that the White House was not involved in this,” Cummings said on CNN’s “State of the Union,” adding: “Based upon everything I’ve seen the case is solved. And if it were me, I would wrap this case up and move on, to be frank with you.”

.........

Cummings’s decision to release a transcript of House Oversight and Government Reform Committee investigators’ interview with the IRS manager highlights Democrats’ growing frustration with Issa’s handling of the matter. Issa has repeatedly declined media requests to release the full transcripts of the interviews his aides conducted, instead disclosing selected excerpts.

Last week, several media outlets reported that front-line IRS employees told congressional investigators that they were simply following orders from Washington in the agency’s targeting campaign against groups with names such as “tea party.”

Cummings is now fighting back by releasing his excerpts of the interviews and calling for full disclosure.

Think we will get that full disclosure?

quote:

Issa responded to Cummings’ allegations and his comment Sunday on CNN’s “State of Union” that the IRS case is “solved” and that he would “wrap this case up” and move on.

"I strongly disagree with … Cummings' assertion that we know everything we need to know,” Issa said in a statement. “His extreme and reckless assertions are a signal that his true motivation is stopping needed congressional oversight and he has no genuine interest in working, on a bipartisan basis, to expose the full truth.”

Is it really closed and we won't be hearing anything about it anymore or is it closed like the issue with Obama's birth certificate was closed when he finally showed it to us and people totally ignored it and still cried that he shouldn't be the president?

Lucylastic -> RE: IRS scandal "closed"? (6/10/2013 9:16:41 AM)

nontif issa has anything to do with it.... not that I believe cummings is an angel either.....but we will have to wait and see I guess

tazzygirl -> RE: IRS scandal "closed"? (6/10/2013 9:16:44 AM)

I read somewhere that Cummings would release the transcript if Issa doesnt.

Why does it seem that the GOP gets their teeth into a good scandal.. and..admittedly some have been pretty good... only to shake it for so long that the seams rip, the stuffing comes out, and the scandal turns into an "oh" moment.

Well, there's always UmbrellaGate and the 'Kill Whitey' video to hang the impeachment proceedings on.

You guys seem to "forget" the IRS ADMITTED they singled out conservative groups. If a republican agent says he forwarded conservatives applications to have "extra questions," etc, that doesn't mean its not political. I means the Republican agent has a good job and doesn't want to lose it! So he does what he is told!

Also, unless the leaker of phone and computer sites is full of shit, he claims the people he worked with DO have the ability to listen in to conversations. Just like all organizations, you will have some who will listen in hoping to find some hot, sexy conversations. If the government has the ability to moniter phone and computer conversations, they also have the opportunity to piss with whoever they want. They know who joined what organization, etc, etc. The Libs see no problem with Democrats in, but when the Rebublicans get in, Libs will be screaming about "potential evesdropping!"

While you are up for some short term nostalgia, let's remember these were political groups who probably should not have qualified as 501c4 social betterment groups.

Let's also remember NONE of their applications were ever REJECTED.

Issa is a prime example of a congressman who would rather investigate than legislate. The old Joe McCarthy strategy to gain fame and power.

A republican appointee who was in charge of the debaucle admitted it in response to a solicited question.  Yes.

Actually the self identified conservative republican IRS agent said he initiated the extra scrutiny without any instructions or prodding from above.

If an IRS agent said HE was soley responsible for the extra bullshit given to ONLY conservative groups, why are all the IRS bigshots taking the 5th?
