TheHeretic -> Orwell's 1984 on the bestseller list (6/12/2013 8:38:42 PM)

According to the story at the link, George Orwell's 1984 has increased in sales by 5,771%. Add in that you can easily find it to read for free online, and I bet the number of people reading it goes a fair bit higher than that.

LA Times story

I hope it scares the hell out of a whole new generation.

Anybody think it should be discredited and mocked, lest that happen?

Wonderful news.

The kids need to know they were sold into slavery by the parents who are trapped in hotel california. (once you check in you cant check out)

Orwell brings to the masses and exposes some very sophisticated propaganda techniques that you see used on the boards all the time. (but not this one haha)

quote:

Doublespeak is language that deliberately disguises, distorts, or reverses the meaning of words. Doublespeak may take the form of euphemisms (e.g., "downsizing" for layoffs, "servicing the target" for bombing [1]), in which case it is primarily meant to make the truth sound more palatable. It may also refer to intentional ambiguity in language or to actual inversions of meaning (for example, naming a state of war "peace"). In such cases, doublespeak disguises the nature of the truth. Doublespeak is most closely associated with political language.[2][3]

Modern uses of Doublespeak

Whereas in the early days of the practice it was considered wrong to construct words to disguise meaning, this is now an accepted and established practice. There is a thriving industry in constructing words without explicit meaning but with particular connotations for new products or companies.[18] Doublespeak is also employed in the field of politics. Hence, education is necessary to recognize and combat against doublespeak-use effectively.

How about how they completely changed the meaning of exterminate to mean genocide when hitler correctly used it in his day to mean extradite out of germany.

new·speak (nspk, ny-)
n.
Deliberately ambiguous and contradictory language used to mislead and manipulate the public.

doublespeak: language used to deceive usually through concealment or misrepresentation of truth;

the worst is that literally all law is written to be deceptive. and some of these court decisions are amazing masterpieces of wordsmithing.

as an example;
Taxes to be paid on all fruit which include pears.

means in legalese you only pay taxes on pears! LOL

So the layman reads it gets all fucked up and pays taxes on all fruits.

The whole fucking legal system is packed with that shit!

No, that's a Roach Motel. You can check out of Hotel California any time you like, but you can never leave.

Lol. Well if you don't want to read it you can get the cliff notes in your morning newspaper :)

wittynamehere -> RE: Orwell's 1984 on the bestseller list (6/12/2013 11:14:25 PM)

Great book, yeah.
Another good one along similar (and perhaps even more accurate) lines was "Brave New World" (1932) by Aldous Huxley. He figured it would take about 600 years for it to get as bad as it was in the story. But we're pretty much there in 2013.

Even though I haven't read it, somehow I agree with your statement.

Not from a political standpoint, but I happen to love the book. Always have. Since I'm a later in life kink person, it became a whole different story once I reread it from an S/m angle. Those scenes in the Ministry of Love became dang hot!

Yeah, I know I'm in P&R. I just couldn't let the kink aspect go on this one. [;)]

Naw, we're not there yet, but we're getting there. What we're missing is (a) the crucial genetic engineering elements, which are being worked toward and argued as the only ethical course for the future, (b) stronger tiering of social status, which is underway, (c) the world controller arrangement, which will take a while, and (d) the soma happy pill, which requires the war on drugs to end first. Ironic that I should find a reason to praise the war on drugs, but there it is: apart from the war on drugs, only time stands between us and the Brave New World. Of course, the happy pill is only required if you want a future with cradle to grave drug induced happiness contingent on compliance. Happiness has never been a requirement for control, after all.

Either way, BNW is still a few decades into the future, but we're solidly on course.

IWYW,
— Aswad.

I must have missed some changes
When did we start altering people to be dumb and servile so as to fill jobs requiring little skill?
When did we start forbidding long term romantic relationships?

Not that I've heard of so far.

I haven't read 1984 in way too long. Might be time to revisit it.

I'm also fond of Orwell's essay Politics and the English Language.

pahunkboy -> RE: Orwell's 1984 on the bestseller list (6/13/2013 4:21:07 PM)

This was a profound book and everyone should have read it.

Orwell was killled or suicided after this book- pick one. I had a chat with a kid born in 1984 what things were like... he took the info in. No attitude- nice kid.

erieangel -> RE: Orwell's 1984 on the bestseller list (6/13/2013 5:10:19 PM)

My son was born in 1984.

He doesn't like what the world is becoming.

He says we need change. He says people need to start learning from history.

From George-Orwell.org:

Orwell died at the age of 46 from tuberculosis which he had probably contracted during the period described in Down and Out in Paris and London. He was in and out of hospitals for the last three years of his life. Having requested burial in accordance with the Anglican rite, he was interred in All Saints' Churchyard, Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire with the simple epitaph: Here lies Eric Arthur Blair, born June 25th 1903, died January 21st 1950.

1984, War is a Racket, and Eisenhower's fair well address should all be required readings in this country. Hell, I'm a veteran and I don't trust our government.

TheHeretic -> RE: Orwell's 1984 on the bestseller list (6/13/2013 9:16:02 PM)

For as deeply as the book has penetrated into our culture and language, I'm sometimes surprised how many people have never actually read it.

The wife was one of those, and I think she was a bit miffed at me, when she did. I noticed it sitting in the same place for a couple days, and asked her about it. She said she'd get back to it, but it was very dark. Proving once again that I'm not just a sadistic smart-ass on the internet, I told her it was ok - Winston found love in the end. [8|]
